Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

My point there was that, in my opinion, the performances by the non-Asian actors in Legend of Chen Zhen are not as bad as you say. At least not as bad as to make an example out of it of bad...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

Were there any in Legend of the Fist?

Here is the listing of one of the main non-Asian actors from the movie: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2531281/

Not only does it say he was acting since a...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

Replace "gwailo" and "gajin" with "yellow people" and "westerners" and "west" with "Asians" and "East" and the exact same thing applies to an "A-list" Western movie like The Departed.

Which, I...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

In the case of The Departed it was even more of a fail as it was a remake of Infernal Affairs, a Chinese movie. But I digress.

Let me underline it this way:

You have a role of a British...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

Is that really any different from Hollywood?

Case and point, The Departed.

The scene with the Chinese gangsters had spoken Cantonese that was not fluent. I remember reading a report on a blog...

Re: A Simple Noodle Story (Zhang Yimou, "Blood Simple" remake) (9/27/10)

I never bought the whole "Hero is just Communist propaganda" angle ever. Seemed to me a cheap attempt at knocking the film.

For me, Hero is heads and shoulders above Crouching Tiger Hidden...

Re: What's the best region free Blu Ray player to get?

Thanks for the news BSTNFAN, but I wonder if this complicates the issue of making it region free. The device that was linked above was said to be for the 83, but with this new model I don't know if...

Re: What's the best region free Blu Ray player to get?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Was the Oppo BDP-83 considered the best Blu Ray player out there? Because I visited their website and it says they have "ceased production on this model". Al...

Re: Johnnie To - Give me some suggestions

Please note that sadly all of the films released under Milkyway films (Johnnie To's company) have really poor English subtitles. They read well but are actually very inaccurate, dumbed down and many...

Re: A Simple Noodle Story (Zhang Yimou, "Blood Simple" remake) (9/27/10)

It's amazing that I even see someone make that claim so easily as if it is some sort of fact. Couldn't disagree more on Hero if it were even possible. It's not only in my opinion the best film...

Re: What's the best region free Blu Ray player to get?

Dane,
I didn't mean that they made region free Blu Rays. That's why I only wrote "region free players" as back with their DVD players they were.

To the others, how does the best Oppo Blu Ray...

What's the best region free Blu Ray player to get?

I'm not sure if this thread is fine here or should be in the HD forum. If this should be in the HD forum, then mods please feel free to move it there.

Anyway, Oppo, while they make great units,...

Re: Funimation acquires 15 Shaw Brothers titles...

The releases are garbage. The video is a bad PAL to NTSC conversion and the subtitles are embarrassing.

Instead of trying to re-translate the subtitles, like how Media Blasters is doing, in the...

Re: John Woo's Red Cliff 3-23-2010

Just to let people know who get the Magnolia release of the cut 1 movie version of both films, the English subtitles seem to dip into the English dub script most of the time. The differences don't...

That isn't the HKL transfer. Just like their Hard Boiled DVD they are using the master from Atlas, which uses the international print meaning all the titles are in English only. And just like their...

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

I got word that DD's The Killer DVD refers to Chow Yun fat's character by the incorrect "Jeff". This means it does not have highly quality subtitles despite the fact that the DD disc seems to lift...

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

They didn't change any names. That's how the names should've been translated in the first place. HK subtitles, especially in that era, are horrible and misguided by altering Chinese names to fake...

Re: Once Upon A Time In China 4, 5, and 6?

6 was released in Hong Kong a couple of times on DVD. Neither of them were great releases but they don't matter because the German DVD I mentioned makes all other releases null and void.

4 and 5...

Re: Once Upon A Time In China 4, 5, and 6?

If you can play PAL, then there is a German DVD of the 6th movie (Once Upon A Time In China & America) that is pretty much the best release of the movie out now. Here's the link:...

Yes, PAL speed up does bother me. This is why I only get PAL DVDs when it is the best version of a film available.

People talk about the slight increase of video resolution because of the PAL...

Re: DVD Talk review of 'Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic'

Hmmm... what other things did it leave out?

Is it just dialog or also scenes?

How much would you say, percentage-wise, is missing?
