OK, it turns out that it was the drive.

I bought a new drive, put it in using the same cables, and bingo! It worked.

Rather annoying, the "old" CD drive wasn't that old. Ah well.

You should be able to use a software DVD player with your drive, even if you have the DxR2 installed. I've done it off and on. Check to see if Creative installed a "disk detector" in your taskbar...
