Re: What's the worst thing a human can do?

There's nothing hypocritical about viewing animals as a source of food while not wanting to see them caused undue distress. Vegetarians suggesting that only they care about animals is ridiculous....

Re: Why is American Sniper such a hit?

Whilst I agree with your overall point, I don't think the Zulu are depicted as particularly evil in that movie. In fact, I'd say they are shown as fairly noble, which is unsurprising considering the...

Re: Which Hollywood death affected you the most?

Probably River Phoenix as he was just a little older than me when he passed away. I can remember watching Stand by me in class at school and every one of us thinking how cool he was. Some of my...

re: SPECTRE (Bond 24) (2015, D: Mendes) S: Craig, Waltz, Bellucci, Fiennes, Bautista

Anyone who loves Ejiofor owes it to themselves to try and check out The Shadow Line. Personally I was kind of hoping he'd be the next Bond, not the Bond villain..

Re: The "Perfect" movie ...what's yours?

Nicely put - pretty much exactly how I feel too. The only thing I'd add is that there are no women in Lawrence, which might count against it from some viewers (certainly my wife is disinclined to...

Re: Gravity (Cuarón, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Just saw this last night on Imax3D - wonderful visual film with some of the background destruction genuinely terrifying.

One question though..
Why did Bullock's character have to let Clooney's...

Re: Which Patrick Swayze do you prefer?

Maybe it's something about French teachers because ours had something similar for Sean Connery. Almost a shrine of pictures to him up on the class wall, which struck us as strange even back then.

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

I guess it's also a question of whether you judge based on a consistently good body of work or one or two spectacular movies. For me Cloud Atlas is spectacular so it skews things in the Wachowski's...

Re: Who is the greatest living filmmaker?

After Cloud Atlas the Wachowski's can do no wrong in my eyes. That movie got to me in a way no other has since I saw Blade Runner as a kid.

Re: Thief (1981 film directing debut by Michael Mann)

Now if only Mann would let them release The Keep. Not a perfect movie by any stretch (and that's being kind) but it works for me somehow. One of the few films that I really want to own.

Re: 10 best visual effects shots in film history

If we're mentioning shark scenes how could you possibly leave out Angelina Jolie punching a shark in the face and then riding it to safety in Tomb Raider? Classic, classic scene.

Re: Movies that turn out tonely different than the actor expects?

Pretty Woman - wasn't it some sort of thriller before the scissors were taken to it?

Starship Troopers - suspect most of the cast thought (and probably still think) that it was a straightforward...

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Abrams, 2013) — The Reviews Thread (Spoilers, Duh)

Thanks for mentioning that: I had no idea he'd broken his long media silence. Just off to read his thoughts now..

BTW wasn't Trek IV the voyage home very successful? It probably didn't make as...

Re: Rush (2013) (D: Ron Howard; S: Hemsworth, Bruhl, Wilde)

It focuses on both pretty equally I'd say. Very good film btw, particularly the Lauda parts. Not entirely historically accurate of course, but then what do you really expect from a movie..

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness (Abrams, 2013) — The Reviews Thread (Spoilers, Duh)

Yes but the studio don't see all of that $465m. Added to which the budget of $190m isn't the only cost - there's also the question of advertising which won't have been an insignificant cost. Frankly...

Re: The Wolverine (Mangold, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

What a disappointing movie. I love Japan and had high hopes, but it was just dull and uninteresting. Not to mention predictable. BTW was Jackman contracturally obliged to be semi-naked throughout...

re: Stephen King's The Stand (2014?)

Rewatched the mini series the other day with my wife and it has not aged well at all. Story is all over the shop and the acting and effects are terrible. Difficult to believe I used to hold this in...

Re: Breaking Bad -- "Buried" -- 8/18/13

I have a horrible feeling that the lottery ticket is going to get thrown away by someone who doesn't know what it is.

Re: Event Horizon - Scenes that were cut

Pretty sure all (or nearly all) of those images were in the released film. I'm not sure that additional gore would really add anything to Event Horizon which works best as a creepy haunted house film...

re: Interstellar (2014) (D: Nolan; S: McConaughey, Chastain, Hathaway, Caine, Burstyn)

I love Cloud Atlas! Not sure this will be as brave as that. I'd settle for another Prestige-level movie though.

Don't know if you've seen his appearances on The Day Today, Numanoid? Still one of the best things he's done IMO..

Re: Alpha Papa (The Alan Partridge Movie)

Watched this today with my wife and a pretty full cinema. Loads of fun and a comedy which succeeds at its most basic level of actually being funny. Had a quick look on imdb and there's no US release...
