Re: The Big Short (2015, D: McKay) S: Bale, Gosling, Pitt, Carell, Tomei

Never knew sophisticated econ lessons could be so entertaining. The whole cast does grade A work. Another best of 2015.

Re: Point Break - REMAKE (2015, Core) - S: Ramirez, Bracy, Winstone, Palmer

Extreme stunts in 3D are the nicest things I can say about this movie. It makes the original seem like Citizen Kane.

Re: The Danish Girl (2015, D: Tom Hooper) S: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander

Great visuals and a standout performance by Vikander, but the story itself is too-controllingly predictable. Redmayne is good as always, but it's a variation on a theme. If you saw The Theory of...

Re: Alicia Vikander

Vikander is arguably better in The Danish Girl than Eddie Redmayne, and is better still in one of 2015's best - Ex Machina.

Re: Brooklyn (2015, D: John Crowley), S: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson

Definitely not. But you may be asked or want to suggest a movie that someone older would enjoy. OTOH I have friends in their 20s and 30s who are also passionate fans of Brooklyn.

Re: Wikipedia's List of cult films

My definition would eliminate mainstream hit movies, which would shorten this list iconsideately. What exactly, for instance, is the "cult" audience for The Sound of Music? Mainstream movies may...

Re: Brooklyn (2015, D: John Crowley), S: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, Domhnall Gleeson

Didn't think I'd be wowed by this movie, but it's one of my top picks for 2015. For older folks who say they don't make 'em like they used to, send them to this one.

Re: Supergirl (S1E09) -- "Blood Bonds" -- 1/4/16

CBS usually waits a season or two before they dumb it down. In this case, they've simplified Kara's motivations and entanglements to the point of insipidness. "The goodness of human nature" used as...

Re: True Detective (S2E01) -- Season Premiere - "The Western Book of the Dead” - 6/21

Glad I ignored all the "micro-critics" and belatedly made it to this party. Season 2 may the the most underrated series of the year. It's nearly as well-written as season one, and Farrell & Vaughn...

Re: Legends (TNT) -- S: Sean Bean -- Season 2 Thread -- Premieres 11/2/15

Better than season 1 although much more complicated. Initially I didn't think I like the overhaul. But the series became more engrossing by the episode. Stick with it to the end and the payoff proved...

Re: Big Brother 15

Link, please? As I understand it, Howard talked about a friend of his that was into dog fighting, which isn't the same his being "into" it at all.

Re: Survivor: Caramoan -- "Kill or Be Killed" -- 3/06/2013

Sherri is the only fan currently in the end zone. She got her tribe to vote her way twice, despite logic dictating otherwise. It'll be interesting to see how her strategy changes now that Shamar is...

Re: Survivor: Philippines -- "Dead Man Walking" -- 11/07/12

After seeing Jeff on his way out devolve into a greedy, rich conservative whiner, it became a pleasure to see him voted out. He did finally take off the nice-guy mask to truthfully describe himself,...

Re: Survivor: South Pacific -- "Running The Show" -- 11/16/11

I'm tired of Albert -- he talks BIG MOVE, but chickens out every time. Cochran is a much bigger risk taker, but he has to be.

Re: The Big Brother 13 after dark thread

Jeff nominated himself after giving Kalia his hysterical ultimatum. For a "smart" player, that was pretty foolish. D-U-M-B even.

Re: DVD Talk review of 'Louie: Season 1' (Blu-ray)

Loved (and agreed) with most of the review ... except for the last sentence. In my experience, the put-down comparison is generally used to buttress weaker material, something Louie doesn't need....

Re: Record Store Day April 16, 2011 - Discussion thread

An interest speculation but likely not as long as anybody can burn a CD which, despite the decline in sales, sells hundreds of 1000s more than the best vinyl seller. Vinyl also requires much more...

Re: Survivor: Redemption Island -- April 6th, 2011

No sympathy here. The Xtian-in-question is definitely overdue for bashing. I don't play Monopoly with a cross in my hand. It was ridiculous for him to play Survivor with a Bible. Made even more so by...

Re: Target Blu-ray Prices March 13 - March 19, 2011

The Target I was in today had Mad Men season 1 and 2 for $19.99 each, and season 3 for $26.99. All were cheaper than the sale prices for the regular DVDs!
