I'm taking a two-pronged approach to this:

Very dissapointed - I had to put this one down...

Very dissapointed - I had to put this one down about 250 pages in. I will have to revisit at a later date. (It just doesn't seem to flow (narratively) as the previous ones in the series).

Robert Kee has a good rep' as a historian about things pertaining to the Irish. You could try his book "Ireland: A History". There are used copies etc. available on Amazon UK.
