Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

It doesn't meet standards. The paper hasn't passed peer review yet.

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

Nothing is as simple as it seems. We need more protests....

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

The physical distance also limits their patient transport and transfer flexibility, They can't put a sick person on a one-hour ambulance ride to go to a hospital that still has available space. Even...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

This site maps out infection rate by county, normalized by population. Green is under 1 new case per day per 100,000 people, yellow is 1-9, orange is 10-24 and red is 25 or above. AZ looks terrible...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

Right now I am not willing to go that far. I think the NE states are not getting hit hard now because they have fewer viruses in the community, maybe as much as 10 times fewer judging from positivity...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

I've heard that hypothesis offered by a prominent professor (I forgot who), that if we study small groups of people like health care workers in NYC or people who live in a certain building or who...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

Even if that is true, it doesn't explain why entire states of NY, NJ, CT, RI and MA are now different than entire states of AZ, TX and FL. This is a much larger scale problem than some groups of...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

The strategy of most of the world is to quickly identify infected people and isolate them, either at home, somewhere controlled or in a hospital. After 2-3 weeks either the people die (and the virus...

Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

I'm sure we will soon hear complaints about the leaks and threats to find and punish the leakers because they are the ones putting our soldiers at risk.

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

Dr. Anthony Fauci warned today that we could exceed 100K infections a day. Right now we are at about 40K. We are having so much trouble now. I don't know how we handle a problem 2.5 times bigger.

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

That's one explanation. Another is that those states now have lower virus prevalence in the population. It's not that there are fewer vulnerable people, but there are fewer viruses floating around....

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

Same in Houston. I don't think they've had to ship anyone out yet, but they are converting children's hospital space to adult use. It's getting tiresome to discuss death rate with some people. I hear...

Re: COVID-19 NON-POLITICAL Thread

AZ is now the hottest spot in the country. The rate of increase in infection cases is similar to what NY and NJ saw at the end of March.

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

The rise in infection cases in AZ is scary. Things are bad in TX, especially Houston, but the slope is nothing like what you are seeing. Hang in there. Even if what they do starting today is totally...

Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

You're assuming that social distancing won't be possible at the Republican Party Convention.

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

For reopening what I think is most important is how many viruses are running around in the community (and how well prepared we are to deal with them).

Re: COVID-19 NON-POLITICAL Thread

But my usual suspect checklist has only: China, New York, California and protesters. You mean there is more?

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

NJ did a great job with the lock-down. It was unquestionably painful but the infection rate improvement was huge -- that to me is a more important consideration for re-opening than deaths. I live in...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

We have become a world of low expectations. We don't deal with problems that are not huge (bigger than the flu) and don't affect us personally.

Re: COVID-19 NON-POLITICAL Thread

I don't know about Singapore but with Vietnam and China, one issue was that Europe demands reciprocity and some countries that have zero Covid-19 virus refuse. They think Europe is low but not at...

Re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

That's a very good point although it wasn't obvious to me until I wrote it out. The problem is that in the US we are so numb with these numbers that 1000 infection cases usually get no attention....

Re: COVID-19 NON-POLITICAL Thread

This doesn't tell the whole story, but positivity rate in NY state is 1% and in CA is 6%. If everything else is equal, that suggests that CA has a bigger combustible pile to start with.

I wish we...
