Re: Planet of the Apes: 40 Year Evolution Blu-ray Collection 11/4/08

I bought the Costco set some years back; it was that inexpensive.

Meanwhile, I heard there were troubles playing the 2008 set on PowerDVD 2018; I had no issues with 2016.

Re: Advice on (older) Dell computer upgrade

I upgraded a Dell 2350 (Celeron 2Ghz) just to see how far I could push it: 2gb GSKILL PC3200 RAM, 300gb SATA HD, Pioneer Blu-ray drive, 8400GS video, Windows 7.

It'll play Blu-rays, but at 70-90%...

Re: Is there a Blu-Ray Player that will upconvert DVDs through component output?

Standard players will not upcovert due to a provision in the CSS license.

An HTPC running Slysoft will, however.

Re: To Play This BD, You Must Renew...

It's DRM. My PS3, which hadn't been used since September 2008, required a firmware update for Terminator Salvation. I'm not sure if it's AACS or BD+ that's to blame, but I wasn't aware of Warner...

Re: What percentage of your blu-ray's are double-dips?

I bought Shooter, which I already have on HD-DVD. That's my only double-dip.

Re: Studios experimenting with Blu-ray releases preceding DVDs

That was because the studios expected most of the initial market to be rental and priced the releases accordingly. Once the rental windows elapsed, prices dropped.

Come to think of it, this is...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

Somehow I doubt that any Wal-Mart store ever had a healthy selection of Laserdisc or S-VHS or any other niche format.

Blu-ray is not a niche format, if only because of the PS3, which Sony expects...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

That's the case with catalog titles of any format and explains why most catalog titles don't appear on a format until several years after its introduction.

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

Looking back, HD-DVD was clearly the underdog and those of us who bought in should have expected what happened.

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

It is, but expect a differential. Always. It was that way with vinyl versus CD, and VHS versus DVD. And even Laserdisc versus VHS. There is always a premium for the superior format.

And the...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

I'd consider 10-12% of today's huge video market as high volume. And it'll only grow.

Regarding new releases, are DVD versions that much cheaper than their Blu-ray counterparts?

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

Blu-ray is already a high-volume product. Not as high volume as DVD, but high volume nonetheless. Sufficiently high volume to occupy more and more space at Wal-Mart and other mass market retailers.

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

I read that blue lasers could hold the key to HD optical discs about 2000 on The Digital Bits. By 2003 there were already two competing HD optical formats and it was common knowledge to anyone in the...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

I'd like to add that DVD revenues are dropping while Blu-ray revenues are rising. Blu-ray margins are several times those of DVD, just like DVD margins were once several times those of VHS. Naturally...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

And DVD collectors were already dreaming of hi-def in 1998, when the nascent format was barely a year old.

It couldn't have come soon enough as far as I was concerned. And I bought into DVD...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

Believe it or not, I was Red during the format war. But I am done mourning and just want hi-def now.

I remember the same things being said about VHS versus DVD. Or Laserdisc versus DVD. But...

Re: Are Studios legally liable for discrimination against DVD consumers?

Blu-ray is now the premiere home video format, so it shouldn't be a surprise the studios are giving it priority.

It's a pleasant change from the late '90s, when the best treatment was reserved...

I use Windows Firewall. That, in conjunction with the firewall in my router, seems to have kept me malware-free for the last four years.

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Beowulf (HD-DVD). First high-def disc played on the new-old HTPC combination.

Bought this one for $4.17 from Amazon. :)

Re: Quick Question For All You High Def Experts Out There

AFAIK component is analog and HDMI is digital. If your display is digital (LCD, plasma, DLP) there will be a major difference between component and HDMI, as is the case with my 32-inch Viewsonic LCD.
