Re: A lament for physical media and/or video stores

Precisely.

I lived in that neighborhood while I was in college during the early-to-mid '90s. The store had been there at least a decade, since the VHS home video boom in the 1980s.

Re: A lament for physical media and/or video stores

One of my favorite video stores from days gone by didn't actually put tapes out on the shelves, just empty VHS boxes arranged in no particular order. The store didn't have genre sections or...

Re: The One and Only Kino Lorber and Olive Films Blu-Ray Thread

The other question is which version of the movie it will be. That film has multiple edits.

Re: Cameron Talks Avatar Redux, 3D, Titanic, Abyss/True Lies Blu-ray

I believe the story is that Cameron said he couldn't look at True Lies again after 9/11 happened.

Re: No Time to Die - 4K, BD - December 20, 2021

The American theatrical release of Casino Royale had multiple small edits to secure a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. It also had different edits in the UK to appease the BBFC. The most "complete"...

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

You're talking the theatrical cut and the original "director's cut"? The latter is 9 minutes longer and had editing tightened up and refined throughout the film.

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Theatrical cut (first time on home video), Director's Cut, Coda.

Coppola ran way behind schedule on production of Godfather III in 1990, but was locked into a contractually mandated Christmas...

Re: Dune (2021) -- 4K and BD -- 1/11/22

Oh lordy. I didn't even like the movie, but the completist in me will compel me to buy a copy anyway. I was kicking myself for missing the SteelBook, especially after looking at the obscene prices...

Re: The Better Robocop UHD Thread

What is it you're attributing to video encoding?

Put in the 2014 MGM disc. Bump the Brightness setting on your TV up one or two digits. Voila, it will look just like the Arrow disc!

Re: The Better Robocop UHD Thread

Were you comparing the Arrow Blu-ray to the older MGM (via Fox) Blu-ray from 2007? In that case, OK, I can see you noticing a big difference. But the Arrow disc uses the same master as the remastered...

Re: The Godfather Trilogy - 4K UHD

Is it the theatrical cut or the original home video cut? I don't believe the actual theatrical cut was ever released on home video.

Godfather III is a unique scenario where Coppola was way behind...

Re: Blu-ray release announcements - Part IV

"1080p High-Definition Widescreen 1.33:1"? Someone didn't proofread the specs template before printing it.

"He is soon living the high life... but soon the idyll is not all it seems." Apparently,...

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It's going to be the same teal-and-orange master Arrow used on Blu-ray, which they licensed from MGM, just upgraded to 4K and HDR now.

Re: No Time to Die - 4K, BD - December 20, 2021

Apparently, the issue is that distribution rights for this movie are split. Universal (which normally supports Movies Anywhere) only has rights for physical media, while United Artists (which...

Re: No Time to Die - 4K, BD - December 20, 2021

In the past, I was able to redeem Universal's digital copy codes at VUDU, as recently as Carlito's Way 4K in October. In fact, I recently bought a whole batch of Universal 4K discs at GRUV...

Re: No Time to Die - 4K, BD - December 20, 2021

The Digital Copy with this is only redeemable at Apple and is not compatible with Movies Anywhere or VUDU. That sucks. :grunt:

Re: Is Blu Ray better than DVD?

NTSC is the standard definition video format used in North America and Japan prior to the transition to HD. It has a resolution of 480i (720x480 interlaced pixels). DVD still uses this format. Other...

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yeah, me too. Though, the teal-and-orange color grade the current master has may not benefit much from HDR.

If it gets good reviews, I'll wait for a standard keepcase release and stick that disc...

Re: Is Blu Ray better than DVD?

This was my first question as well, and I'd bet not.

If you are using the yellow RCA composite video cable, that is not capable of transmitting high-definition video. You need to buy an HDMI cable...

Re: UHD release announcements

Note that this comes after a Kino rep vehemently denied there was anything wrong with the disc and barely stopped short of calling everyone who complained about the error a bunch of morons.

Re: UHD release announcements

I can only imagine how bad all that lousy blue-screen SFX in Escape from L.A. will look in 4K.

Re: The Official Arrow Films 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Director's Cut is a better movie overall, with a narrative that almost makes sense. The theatrical cut is an incoherent mess.

The two cuts have very different musical scores (Tangerine Dream...

Re: Dune (1984) in 4K

I finally received the Koch Films SteelBook, from Germany by way of a friend in Belgium. I'm not gonna lie, the artwork is weird. I'm not sure where they got that image of a lumpy sandworm from....

Re: Criterion releases on Blu-Rays, Part II

Excited for Miller's Crossing on Criterion. Not at all excited by that horrible cover art.
