Re: The Natural - April 6th

The Natural is a poem. The Director's Cut has a tin ear for rhythm and pace, which is why I dislike it. It may have somewhat stronger story structure, but it no longer sings.

Re: The Natural - April 6th

One of my top five movies, and definitely #1 sports movie, of all time. I'm glad it's not the Director's Cut, which IMO is inferior and unnecessary. I'll keep my DC DVD, but now I can finally get rid...

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Sure. But your example (Super35) illustrates a situation where generally the director is trying to have his cake and eat it too -- protecting for an "OTAR" (original theatrical aspect ratio, to coin...

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

a) Avatar was not shot on film.

b) If a movie is protected by the director for multiple aspect ratios, and then cropped one way for theatrical presentation and a different way for home video, then...

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

Well, it's neither the OAR nor the director's preferred aspect ratio. I'm not sure what you mean by "a movie like this." A movie shot and composed in 16x9? A movie seen on a majority of theatrical...

Re: The Pacific (HBO)

The Sunday evening HBO telecast looked as good on my Comcast feed as Comcast has ever looked. If the quality holds up I can live with re-watching the series on my TiVo for a while.

But I'll also...

Re: AVATAR Blu-ray - 4/22/10

I was thinking that it would be re-released as a 3D theatrical "event" -- perhaps with "scenes! you've! never! seen! before!" -- around next Christmas, before the 3D disc is released. Fox's quick...

Re: Help, dvd/ps3/tv & headphones

The PS3 has a "simultaneous output" feature that lets you use the analog stereo audio outs and the optical out at the same time.

You can just feed the headphone amp with analog direct from the...

Re: Help reading blu labels

It would be exactly the same as it is in a movie theater. 2.35 fills the whole screen. 1.85 leaves empty space at the sides (which can be covered by a curtain). 1.33 leaves more empty space at the...

Re: Help reading blu labels

Even though I'm a staunch OAR defender, I must interject that this is not normally true: in most properly configured theaters, the mattes open up for 2.35, and 'scope films actually are shown on a...

Re: Why are Blu-ray movies more expensive than normal DVDs?

Almost nothing you buy is priced according to its cost to produce. If you consider that the only "legitimate" basis for pricing a product, then you're not paying attention.

The price of everything...

Re: Just watched my first blu-ray movie-not impressed

You have too many posts to be a troll, but you sound like one.

When something is too small to see, do you give up and say "that's something I'm never going to be able to see?" Or do you move...

Re: Which aspect ratio for Avatar Blu-ray do you reckon?

In the much-quoted statement from Cameron, he acknowledges that while they wanted as many Real3D screens as possible to be 1.85, it wasn't always possible and so there would be 2.35 3D prints made as...

Re: How is the Playstation 3 at playing DVDs?

Just to be clear: it is BD that is quirky; the PS3 behaves the same as every other BD player in this regard.

Re: Bare-bones Blu-ray?

I don't really have a problem with the idea. I have a reasonably clear idea of what movies I want to buy and which ones I'll just rent, and when I rent I rarely watch extras beyond deleted scenes.

Re: My mom hates black bars; anything I can do?

It's not that hard to explain. Hand her a picture frame and a photograph that's smaller than the frame. Ask her to figure out how to use that frame with that photo. She will soon understand that the...

Re: Secondary Audio settings - opinions

Most people turn SA off for reasons discussed above -- except for the PS3, players can't provide lossless audio when SA is turned on.

It's a pain you'll have to endure. SA is present on many...

Re: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - 10/20/09

No, it's the level of entire soundtrack that is adjusted by the dialnorm setting. If you can't hear the dialog, just turn up the center channel.

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

The International -- Stunning PQ. Plot kind of fell apart as it went along.

Watchmen -- Very good PQ, rockin' audio, hard for me to be objective about the movie.

Bonnie & Clyde -- OK PQ, clean...

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Flyboys - extremely dumbed-down rendition of a story that needed no enhancement, utterly trite and predictable. But any movie about WWI air warfare is better than no movie, and the CG air combat,...

Valkyrie Gorgeous transfer, top notch AQ and PQ. Very well done, with a lot of authentic detail. Would have preferred a different lead actor, one with a British accent (since that;'s what was...

Re: Blu-ray Subtitle Poll - Please Read and Vote

Well it's not hard for me, because even though I don't have a CIH display I still prefer the subs to be inside the frame.

Three reasons: 1) It's how they were in the theater; 2) they're easier to...

re: Last BD (or, unrealistically, HD DVD) you watched?

Knowing -- after which my wife and I, longtime Firesign Theatre fans, turned to each other and said: "This is shit. But it's really great shit."

What is the difference between a story that has an...
