Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

With remand to the lower courts, I would imagine Trump's lawyers will be able to "run out the clock."

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Not going to happen. But nearly all Redskins fans would be willing to call the team 'shitheads' if it meant no Snyder.

That's the worst part of this. Will still have the same shitty owner,...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Sure. Because George Preston Marshall was a racist and needed to mirror up the name (from Braves when they shared the Boston Braves park) with the Red Sox when then moved to Fenway Park before they...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Context and intent are everything....at least to me.

Of course no rational conversation would go to that length but of course I would say the image refers to a Native American. I basically...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

I've never argued about the dictionary. I know it's full well there. I've been arguing context and common/current usage the whole time.

As I said before, in a vacuum, if one were to name a team...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

No. But you so easily have brushed aside this survey. One with overwhelming results. From an outlet I assume you find reputable.

No I do not. I have repeatedly argued the term has been...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

You mean a Washington Post (who are politically inclined against Snyder and the name) survey? I say the the survey. Particularly one with such overwhelming results. Not like it was 60/40 or...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Seriously. What are the ground rules? Decker says it's fine in his book even though the symbolism is racist and offensive to him and has been for years.

Does the average person noodle it through...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Still not answering the context question. Nor how the term has been co-opted. Essentially you're saying there is no debate so STFU.

I already said I can live with dropping the name. I just don't...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Yes. Definition terms. How are they used now? Have you ever heard that term in life (not Westerns from the 1950s) used to describe anything other than a football team. I bring up my example from...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

And with this you are arguing context.

As I've said before, context is the key. The term has been effectively co-opted. Nobody hears the term 'Redskins' now and thinks Native American. It...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

That's fine. 1 person. At least I finally got you to acknowledge it.

And I found this point salient out of that piece:

It's either offensive or its not. Not this we get to use it w/o...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Decker still doesn't want to acknowledge the WP poll. Only 1 person who wants Redskins done has so far. Why is this?

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

That's fine, yet convenient that you draw the line before the team you've always supported.

And again - the poll. 90%. Of Native Americans. Your majority argument is extremely questionable.

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Wasn't there some HS that recently wanted to use 'Stallions' but women found it offensive for some reason?

We should be like Euro soccer and have no official nicknames. Then nobody can take...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Generals and Admirals are boring as shit. Redtails would take a major education campaign. Snyder's favorite is apparently Warriors which is lame.

The name is going to be dumped. If they try to...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Said it before....nothing.

Euro soccer clubs don't have official names. Why do we need them. And any new name would probably offend someone anyhow.

I won't be calling the team by the new...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

That will be interesting to see since the NFL has yet to do new contracts with the networks, which are coming up. AFAIK, no player has such a contract.

Outside of that, need to see the guarantees...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Glad to see someone acknowledge that poll. Finally.

I totally agree that we are in a different place now than 4 years ago. That is quite obvious.

Though I fail to see what police brutality...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

Even if 100 out of 100 think it refers to Native Americans (I agree that they don't think it refers to potatoes), how does that square with the Wash Post poll results on the franchise name?

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

I don't think Snyder has the cash to buy them out. Nearly all of his net worth is tied to his franchise equity. He's not Kroenke.

They don't want to be associated with Snyder, no matter the...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

So 3 of Snyder's minority partners want out (who own a combined 40% of the franchise (I didn't know the minority stake was that high). But the problem is that this will be a tough environment to...

Re: Official 2020 NFL Off-Season Thread

I won't speak for deadman, but I don't know if it does or not. Show me the evidence of it. I certainly get that white progressives are offended by it.

Here is the Wash Post poll I brought up...
