I wouldn't recommend it as a blind buy, it's even less accessible than something like Solaris. I think you can find it on youtube if you want to watch it before purchasing.

And a lot of DVD transfers featured a magenta-push and contrast boosting. It's not wise too look at a DVD era master and assume that is the correct version of how a film should look. They weren't...

That makes sense and it makes me glad that I held off on the massive Zatoichi boxset. I just don't need all of the DVDs for that one.

No idea. Criterion just seems to be sitting on Cure for whatever reason. There's a serious lack of post-2000 Japanese films available on Blu here in the States.

The contrast does seem too high on the Criterion. I will still probably pick it up, but I'll wait for the B&N sale in July.
