re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I'll take the Haneke trilogy. 71 Fragments is not as good as the other two.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I have not yet patronized that shop, but I think a dedicated thread in the Store forum would be useful.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

That's a pity. I was hoping we finally had a realistic domestic alternative.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Agreed. My guess is that The Straight Story is the Lynch film for those who don't share his particular sensibility. I am one of those. The acclaim for his films perplexes me, but I do love The...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yes, many first-rate Canadian films were never released on DVD, much less Blu-ray.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Frownland, which I saw a few years ago, is good, but very discomfiting.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

That goes for almost everything by Lynch, imo. The only film of his I have liked is The Straight Story.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

^So that sale occurs annually? I don't want to do it this year, but there are a few Criterion Blu-rays I would like to have without paying an arm and a leg.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I have not, but I'm away from media for half of the year, as you know. I might give it a try, but it sounds pretty dodgy. It must be a fairly new outfit.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Thanks for conveying your experience with this company, Lorenzo. It gives one pause. I don't know of many professional online retailers that charge one's CC before the order has shipped.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Boat People is an interesting choice, considering it is quite obscure and has never been released in any format. I've had it in my collection for years, but haven't watched it yet. This C.C....

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Meh, Part 1 is the only one worth owning, I think. It's far and away the best of the series, and probably the best martial arts film of all time, despite the xenophobia and dodgy English actors. I...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

All right, who cares about all that Criterion-fanboy jazz. Where the hell is Streetwise?!

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I haven't been to Cinematheque Ontario in years, since it was up at the AGO. What does a regular movie ticket cost nowadays, BrianT?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Thanks, andicus!:) I haven't seen it, but Tiny is the one who ended up with 10 kids or something, no? I would be more interested in a follow-up that revisited all of the kids, and maybe even some...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I'm something of a broken record in this regard, I realize, but can I expect to see Streetwise released within the decade?

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Make that three. It's a fairly good film, and stars one of my fave actors in Lino Ventura, but it's far from a masterpiece. I haven't seen it recently enough to be more specific.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Yes, it's undoubtedly among the greatest of all war films, and the director's wife also made a very good Russian WWII film, The Ascent (1976).

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Maybe Bruce Campbell bought the rights to the Melville film.
