Probably about 4-5 years. Display technology is moving so much faster than back in our parents' days. TV technology from the 70's-90's didn't change that much, so yeah, you could keep the same TV...

No, you don't need gold-plated cables or even the official "Premium HDMI Certified" cables. All you need is a High Speed HDMI cable.

Only UHD BD's are region free. BD and DVD region codes are still enforced.

Exactly. There were too many using MPEG-2, low bitrate VC-1, and single layer Blu-rays.
