I think it has a lot to do with mindset. I'm very wary of buying movies and/or tv shows digitally, but I'm more than happy to rent via amazon, itunes, etc. I have a buddy who watches a TON of stuff...

But shouldn't the sound at least be output in regular Dolby 5.1 or DTS? Maybe it's only being output in PCM 2 channel. Once again, I haven't fully figured out PCM yet.

That's what I'm thinking. At the very least the sound from the HD-DVDs should be being played in Dolby Digital or DTS. As for HDMI audio, all I have to select from is PCM or Downmixed PCM.

I'm getting audio currently with only HDMI hooked up. Dolby Digital and DTS played from standard DVD plays fine, but the reciever doesn't seem to recognized the digital sound coming from HD-DVDs...
