Costco carries a Toshiba upconverting DVD player for $79 (maybe less, actually).
Out the box, it'll upconvert your DVD's to 480p/720p/1080i, play Divx files, and it even comes w/ it's own HDMI...

My 50" Sony RP-LCD A10 has a x720 native resolution.

As for the original post, I do agree that with a nice-sized FP setup, 720p would most likely pale in comparison to a nice 1080p...
