Re: DDDHouse Status

essentially scuppered by UK law changes that closed loopholes on channel islands shipping operations that bypassed VAT laws. HK-owned, UK-operated - i could pick up HK discs for £6 - £8 all in at one...

Re: DDDHouse Status

probably CDWOW, which was HK based and did stock a lot of HK discs quite cheaply ... they're now WOWHD, owned by the same company as deep discount, import CDs - watch out of sales of labels at any of...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

i think there's plenty of knowledge in forums i can't quite relate to. usually american audiences that had more choice and freedom from local releases that predates dvd, whereas i couldn't explore to...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

there's been something of a mini run on films akin to much of what third window licenses. probably a good half dozen potentials each year for the last five years or so. at least, that's how i've...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

something odd happened to american releases of japanese films within the last five years. there will always be exceptions, and i think it's maybe telling that in this respect it tends to be that we...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

i don't stop by here often any more, but flixtime's reviews are really useful.

tend to find online reviewers for asian stuff are a little too likely to be fairly fresh to what they're watching,...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

not a comment on flixtime's review above, but, having watched the film now, i'd say it's a brave person who feels capable of treading around the risk of looking distinctly dodgy for reviewing a film...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

the aspect of getting to see something on a big screen and relatively early is a draw for me, but, to be honest, i've only ever been to one festival and that was accidental rather than intentional. i...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

one of the major reasons I doubt the true value of most festivals is the need to maintain a certain amount of easy-sells in return for an ongoing returning audience & publicity in a potentially...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

get this feeling that a lot of 'life without principal' relies upon close-quarters knowledge of the state of HK; not the film industry, but the general culture of money and wealth. makes me wonder...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

have silenced on BD. not watched yet - in process of getting new tv and better bd player. only plumped for DVDs of 'flying swords', 'life without principal' and 'viral factor'. prefer 'the chaser' to...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

the point isn't so much that you can learn about culture through watching films, it's more that it's seems logical to suggest it's possible to some extent because it can't be the case that nothing is...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

buyer beware? well, yes, but how do you become aware of what Asian cinema is or how to understand what you'll get, especially if you're casually picking things in first sight in rental stores? that's...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

the idea of a quick buck isn't about the whole process, the process that involves many people, a good length of time and a whole heap of cash. i'm thinking more of the companies like tartan that, as...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

it's funny that, as someone old enough to remember what it was like before DVD, these habits that western distributors have are actually very long-standing, and that an awful lot of people in the...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

don't think NIMH Rat is refering to the idea of asian youth affecting the license choices western companies make, but instead to the idea that western distributors can only pick from what asia makes...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

i'd say that's true for what cinema is produced currently, on the whole, within asian countries, of course, but pre-DVD there's so much of the history of the output that we only get slight tastes of...

neither. production company's decision to make an international version, which is what the UK and USA have had.

Re: DDDHouse Issue

tell dddhouse. i've had things take an age at times, and they normally give a hint they'll replace it if it doesn't turn up within a certain amount of time.

Re: "The Killing", Danish tv series (DVD, 04/04/11)

Re: "The Killing", Danish tv series (DVD, 04/04/11)

it's pretty standard stuff, unfortunately. biggest problem it's faced is that it's not only an accessible kind of TV suddenly appearing here on a channel not exactly known for accessible material...

Re: What´s HOT in Asian cinema right now?

there's probably quite a few more yakuza films out in the USA than first seems to be; quite a lot of subbed bootlegs too, unfortunately. i'd suggest reading mark schillings small book on nikkatsu...

Re: Looking for Blu-Ray Importing Site

there's no PAL / NTSC issue with HD; conversion is only needed to deal with extras on discs (in SD) and with DVDs that the player might have to handle.

as for currency rates, you'll never find two...
