Yes you can most definetly buy a seperate center channel speaker from most audio/video suppliers.

You have ruled out the wiring but I would also suggest ruling out a problem with the amp/receiver...

Just to verify, you are running two HDMI cables? One from the Bluray to the Receiver and one from the receiver to the Display(TV)?

All versions of HDMI support the basic digital audio formats.
