Re: First 4K home video format (Sony FMP-X1 4K Media Player, $699)

This is just like D-VHS, in that it is meant to be a stop-gap content solution for early adopters until the new software format is established. Sony isn't betting on this to be a mainstream success.

Re: RIP Richie Havens

Like a lot of people, my interest in Richie Havens began with the Woodstock film.

He recorded a lot of cover songs, including some great versions of Beatles classics like 'Lady Madonna,' 'Eleanor...

Re: A question re: fullscreen movies on blu-ray

Blu-rays are natively 1080p, so there are no extra lines of resolution that can be squeezed into the middle 4:3 frame of your screen.

Re: Arcade Fire -- Fourth Studio Album -- 2013

That's my favorite, too. But as you can see by the other responses, it's definitely the dark horse of their career so far.

Re: Backlash from Folk fans over Dylan's move to electric..but none for Simon & Garfu

Dylan was viewed as the voice of a generation and the second coming of Woody Guthrie who was going to rescue the folk movement from obscurity. His songs were co-opted as anthems for the Civil Rights...

Re: Bob Dylan - Tempest (09/11/12)

Me, too. I remember being in a shell-shocked daze, walking around Best Buy to get my copy of 'Love and Theft'.

Welcome to the 2010s, Buttmunker. :)

Anyway... good band. Never heard of them before.

Re: Beastie Boys' MCA (Adam Yauch) dead at 47

I hated "Fight for Your Right" when it came out, but quickly learned there was a lot more to The Beasties than dumb punk.

This is a sad one.

Re: Lawrence of Arabia - FINALLY arrives...

It's Cannes. I'd be shocked if it was anything but 70mm.

Re: Any Jules Dassin fans here?

I'm a fan. Dassin was a real iconoclast whose work was consistently intelligent and interesting. If you have Netflix, a lot of his movies are available for streaming.

I would very much recommend...

Re: 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

Since their albums continue to sell, it's strange to say that their music has been forgotten. I regularly hear Kiss on the radio, and not just on the classic rock stations. The "Jack" format...

Re: 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees announced

Based on their music, they should definitely be in there. They have one of the deepest catalogs in the genre.

Re: The birth and death of the Action Movie

A little later, as in the 1980s, as the author states.

He says the "purebred American action film" must have "A loner hero who excels at combat," "A perverse fetishization of firearms," and...

Re: The birth and death of the Action Movie

You need to familiarize yourself with Tom Mix. He was making terrific action movies in the 1910s and '20s. Check out The Great K & A Train Robbery sometime.

Re: Lawrence of Arabia - FINALLY arrives...

Well, if it's in 70mm, then you should be more excited about the big screen, but if it's projected video ala 'Taxi Driver', then get excited about buying the Blu-ray and watching at home.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

The Certified Copy cover is the worst. It's photoshop ugly and the way it literalizes the theme of the movie is cringe-worthy.

Re: Beatles-Hey Jude?

That was the standard practice in the UK at the time. They wanted fans to purchase both LPs and 45s, where as in the U.S., for the most part, there was no real incentive to purchase a 45 after buying...
