Re: Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection, 10/25/11

This is a great value. Even as MSRP, $100 for the complete Hal Roach Studios L&H library is a deal. The UK set went for $150-200 USD for the longest time before price reductions.

RHI seems to be...

Re: Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis ever?

The problem with the Moroder cut is that it's obsolete due to the 2010 reconstruction in terms of completeness and score. Fritz Lang's optimal version was the German premiere cut in B&W and with...

Re: What Hitchock, Orson Welles and DePalma films are not on DVD?

Lionsgate has Welles' Macbeth from the Republic/Paramount library. Remastered edition released in R2 France by Wild Side Video.

Criterion might have Othello as part of the Caidin Film Trust...

Re: Psycho 50th Anniversary BD

Even if it were filmed for 4x3, you wouldn't see Perkins' face on most TVs due to overscan. There's no debate and nothing sane about using an ancient VHS tape as any sort of reference for a film.

Re: What movies would you have bought if they were on DVD instead of DVD-R?

I don't care about DVD-R, but the price has kept me from getting any Warner Archive releases. If they cut them to $10 each, I'd probably have some by now.

$20 is too much for a movie-only DVD, let...

Re: Official MST3K / Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic DVD Thread

For some reason Netflix has none of the Vol. 2 discs up for rental - not even listings. They at least have the few OOP/expired discs listed for "save for later" like Godzilla vs. Megalon.

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

Criterion "adds" windowboxing in the process of downsampling their HD transfers to NTSC.

Re: Disney releases "Snow White and the 7 Dwarves" 7 WEEKS Early on Blu-ray

After a quick check, it looks like most of them are true 1080p. Steamboat Willie looks to be a Lowry Digital remaster (which appeared on the Oswald set in 480p). They look fantastic for the most...

Re: Nosferatu : The Ultimate DVD Edition 11/20/2007!

Pandora's Box and Metropolis also have act cards, but the current DVDs have new intertitles.

By the way, I imported the Masters of Cinema edition and it really is a great release. Score issues...

Re: The General: 11/10/09

This is a totally left-field release from Kino. Great pick for their first BluRay, not to mention the first R1 silent (even if MoC's Sunrise is beating it by two months). The HD master looks...

Re: Disappointing Criterions

W.C. Fields 6 Short Films is the most puzzling. No idea why it was released through Criterion instead of HVE. Interlaced, no digital restoration, and no extras. Still better than the public domain...

Re: Are The Essential Art House discs the same transfers as Criterion?

Grand Illusion is the same, Beauty and the Beast uses the special edition remaster (with the original "chalkboard" titles).

re: The African Queen? 23 March 10

I have the quite good Carlton/ITV DVD with the Jack Cardiff commentary. It would be nice if Paramount ported it over.

It's about time they release it, but at least it'll be worth the wait. All the...

Re: "Why DVD's Better Than Blu-ray" (IGN.DVD article.)

DVD can enhance VHS to an extent. The image quality will remain the same (no degredation) and you can convert to progressive. I've transfered a few tapes to DVD-R with 24p conversion and it looks...

Re: Pinocchio 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition - Spring 2009

While I think the contrast could have been a bit deeper, the BluRay looks fantastic. Hopefully Disney will fix the audio errors. I'm really liking the latest Lowry Process on the last few remasters...

Re: Tom & Jerry Chuck Jones Collection - June 23/09

I saw one of the Jones shorts in 35mm and it looked correct in 1.85:1.

Sort of sad this means we'll probably not see the Gene Deitch cartoons. They're funny and I like the animation style....

Re: Releases That Really Do Not Benefit From Hi-Def

BluRay can make everything from VHS sources to IMAX look better than on DVD.

For NTSC/PAL origin stuff like Monty Python's Flying Circus or All in the Family, there's the enhanced image quality...

Re: Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary Edition ---> 4th quarter 2009 (rumor)

The most I'd expect for GWTW on BluRay would be three Blu discs (two for the movie, one for the extras) and the 2-disc musical score that's been out. Then there's the possibility for a digital copy...

Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!

I really hope this means some of their silents were licensed out. Criterion apparently licensed The Wedding March from Paramount, so it would be neat to have another Von Stroheim film out - Greed....

Re: 1.85:1 widescreen bd movies showing up as fs on tv??

I don't think many 1.66:1 films have been put on BluRay, cropped or not. The Truman Show was apparently 1.66:1, then stretched to 1.78:1. A Clockwork Orange and Chungking Express are proper 1.66:1.

Re: 1.85:1 widescreen bd movies showing up as fs on tv??

Despite a lot of video reviewers sweating out about 1.85:1 films being shown as 1.78:1... All that's done is a tiny bit of opening up of the image. It's completely inconsequential.

Re: Worst DVD Transfer

Also, Fox's horrible remaster of Oklahoma! - both versions. The CinemaScope version is OK, but it has noise reduction that causes skies to look frozen.

The Todd-AO version has to be seen to...

They used an original dye-transfer print as reference for the 4K restoration. Same complaints were raised over The Wizard of Oz, but I can confirm that the 4K of Oz is nearly identical to the...
