Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

[/QUOTE]

Yep, there's definitely more than enough people out there confirming that Kenny is wrong. And I just compared my Chungking Express BD with his photo and his setup is showing that in the...

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

Glenn Kenny (http://somecamerunning.typepad.com/some_came_running/2011/05/how-to-tell-an-aspect-ratio-from-a-hole-in-the-ground.html) claims it's not 1.78:1 or 1.85:1 -- apparently it has black bars...

Re: criterion paths of glory cropped?

Actually I've heard that Robocop was shown in 1.66:1 in Europe, although perhaps not at all European screenings.

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

The pessimists were right, the Clockwork reissue is the exact same encode (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/A-Clockwork-Orange-Blu-ray/20821/#Review). They went to the effort and expense of making a 4K...

Re: (Tran Anh-Hung's) Norwegian Wood on BD/DVD?

There is no legitimate English-subbed DVD. Plus 99.9% of DVDs on eBay that ship from HK/China/Macau are bootlegs -- that's an exaggeration but not a huge one.

Re: (Tran Anh-Hung's) Norwegian Wood on BD/DVD?

The film also has distributors in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia, so it's a safe bet at least some of them will step up with an English-subbed DVD and/or BD. It's already opened in HK,...

Re: Demolition Man Blu on 8/16/11!!

There's no reason to think DM will look or sound any different from the non-U.S. releases Warner has already put out, with the likely exception of the restaurant scene (Taco Bell in North America,...

re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

Yeah, after the restoration is done. But I'll bet almost anything the current master is SD only, and NTSC only at that.

re: The Official Eureka / Masters of Cinema Thread

It's probably SD, so that would be a pretty good reason. It's obviously the same master Fantoma used in 2003 and I doubt that was done in HD.

Re: Lolita and Barry Lyndon coming in 2011

The press release (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/308822/whv-press-release-a-clockwork-orange-40th-anniversary-edition-and-stanley-kubrick-limited-edition-collection-blu-ray) says O...

Re: Extended cut of 2001 may be coming soon!

You might've read it on this very site (http://www.dvdtalk.com/leonvitaliinterview.html):

I suspect this footage survived because it actually made it into a publicly-screened version (the...

Re: Extended cut of 2001 may be coming soon!

Jeffrey Wells has a post (http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2010/12/17_minutes.php) (vouched for by Robert Harris in the comments) which provides some info on what's in this footage -- still vague but...

Re: Foreign Cinema in BLU (part 2)

Criterion usually makes some effort to avoid excessive redundancy in their extras -- maybe they felt there was too much overlap between the commentary and the video extras. Just a guess, I haven't...

Re: Studio Ghibli's first catalog title on blu is 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Yeah, Ghibli's been slow to get into BD -- Ponyo was their first one and that was 2 1/2 years after Earthsea hit video. They could've released some catalog titles in the interim, but they didn't. I...

re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

It's actually 2.55:1, which is odd. Criterion/BFI used 2.21:1 because that was the AR of the 70mm enlargements. Some of the DVD editions are 2.35:1 because that was presumably the AR of the 35mm...

Re: Battle Royale (Arrow Releasing)--October 2010?

The brief (2D) glimpses I've seen of the 3D version suggest a big improvement -- the hazy, muddy look characterizing all previous releases seems to be gone -- but I've assumed since the beginning...

Re: John Woo's REIGN OF ASSASSINS (starring Michelle Yeoh) blu-ray available this wee

He started as producer, but was present for the entire shoot and gave a lot of advice to Su -- so the final English credits list him as co-director as well (the Chinese credits are different).

I...

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

So why didn't they do this with The Killer DVD, or for that matter the two (36th Chamber and Killer) BDs? AFAIK there is no more technical obstacle to doing this with HD than there is with SD.

Re: Weinsteins (w/ Tarantino) announce new asian line: "Dragon Dynasty"

Dropping the R3 extras (which were already subtitled in English) is a pretty annoying move. I don't understand how DD keeps doing proper NTSC versions of these Shaw titles but then does a half-assed...
