Yeah, the alternative was Bustamante... I get why the Terminator got elected instead.

This one seems a lot worse, though (if the recall happens). Last time, the recall actually got more votes than the gubernatorial election, and Arnold got 48.6% of the vote. If the recall happens, I expect the voter turnout to be abysmal and the winner to get like less than 40% of that vote.

I hope the recall fails because it was a rough couple years to be a state employee after the last one.
There's no Arnold running this time.

And from what I read, your explanation is not why Newsom is switching strategies. It was just too complex of messaging for the average voter to grasp. "Vote no on the recall. But if a recall is approved, vote for this guy to replace me." Made perfect sense to me, and would make sense now. But people are dumb.

I guess that you can’t answer Gavin Newsome in Question 2?

Correct. (Or, more accurately, you could write him in, but it wouldn’t count.)

Yeah, the Dems screwed up. They should have put a candidate on that could get at least 25% of the votes in case the recall went through.

The only minor silver lining is that Governor Elder will only have a year to try to fuck everything up before he's voted out.

Still enough time to outlaw mask mandates in school or whatever else he wants to screw up.

Republicans can kill an awful lot of people in a year.

There’s fuckery afoot in Colorado.

Apparently the confidential passwords to voting machines in Mesa county ended up on a right-wing conspiracy theory website. It’s thought the current county clerk may have something to do with the password leak. She couldn’t comment for the article because she’s currently at the conference with the MyPillow guy.

Also, this is coincidentally the district Lauren Boebert represents.

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

I would love if Larry Elder became governor of CA. I really can't stand Newsom - he's always been a slime saying one thing and doing another.

As someone who listened to Elder for years and years on the radio - I find him to be a man of deep convictions and character. There's lots of things I disagree with him on and some that I think he's way out there about but he's not running for King - he's running for Governor so there will be plenty of ways to keep him reasonable. He'll easily get my vote. And if he screws everything up in a year that's fine too - at least he will have had a chance.

Do I think he has a good chance? No. Did I think Trump had a good chance? No. So who the heck knows anymore what voters will do.

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

Looks like Canada will be having a federal election on Mon, Sept 20, 2021, to be officially announced tomorrow. Maybe it should go in a separate thread, but I figured it was worth just posting here for now.

That's right... the campaign officially begins in a few days and ends in just over a month.

LPC - Liberals
CPC - Conservatives
NDP - New Democrats (left of Liberal)
BQ - Bloc Quebecois
GPC - Green Party
PPC - Peoples' Party... (Canada's far right nutjobs.)

Should be an interesting race!

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

I have NO IDEA what those two graphs mean. At all. 😂

You guys have a wacky way of picking your next leader. And I say this fully aware that I live in a country where a borderline retarded amoral sociopath TV game show host got legitimately elected to be leader of the free world somehow despite receiving 3 million fewer votes than his nearest competitor.

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

First one is polling for the popular vote, basically. Nothing too spectacular, but you can see that even the most popular party is looking to get about 35% of the vote. That may change in the next month.

Second one is the expected number of seats. Think of it like the electoral college, but those people are actually elected to go to Ottawa to govern. The dotted line is 50% of the seats. Ideally, the Liberal party will stay above that line and get a simple majority. That's what they want. But even if they don't get 50%, they still lead the country by having the most seats, with the participation of whoever gets the other seats.

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

So the dotted line is essentially the same as 270 Electoral College votes. Now I understand.
If they’re close but not quite there, what sort of concessions would the give another party to join them, and which one would it likely be?

In the scenario of Elder winning election, hopefully Feinstein shows an ounce of selflessness and self awareness and resigns a few weeks before he is sworn in so Newsom can name a replacement for her before he is out of office.

The "odd-terms" are on November 2, about 70 days away. There are thousands and thousands of elections all over the country, from local to state, as well as ballot initiatives. Please be sure to vote.

Check if you're registered at iwillvote.com

Thanks.

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

I knew this California Recall Election was somewhat a joke, but it became so much clearer just how insane the whole thing is today. Last week I received my mail-in ballot (everybody gets one for this), and mailed it in. It struck me as odd that with 46 candidates there was no Voting Guide, which usually comes weeks earlier in order to learn about who's running and what-not. It arrived today. A week after I sent in my ballot. Very helpful. But after perusing it, decided that it wouldn't have help me decide anything. Anyone thinking that that California's Recall Election isn't a joke needs to see some of the candidate statements. Here are a few of the better samples (yes, these are real!): Spoilerizing for size

Re: 2021 Elections Discussion Thread

I read that too and it made me wonder what the barrier for entry was to get your name on the ballot and your picture/description in the yearbook, I mean voter's guide. What a gigantic waste of money (I mean all of it is, but I'm specifically talking about printing and mailing those to every single voter... at least unlike the other candidates like Elder they didn't waste as much ink in their descriptions)

What are the candidate filing requirements to run as a replacement candidate?

A replacement candidate must follow existing primary election nomination procedures to run for the office of Governor and must file the required paperwork no less than 59 days before the scheduled recall election, which was July 16, 2021.

A replacement candidate must:
  • File with the county elections official, in which the candidate is registered to vote, the following:
    • A Declaration of Candidacy, and
    • Nomination Papers, with 65 to 100 valid nomination signatures.
  • Pay a filing fee of $4,194.94 to the county elections official at the time the candidate obtains their Declaration of Candidacy and nomination papers.
    • A candidate may choose to submit a minimum of 7,000 valid signatures on petitions in lieu of the filing fee.
https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/upc...BMsv5b3s#qandr

So 100 signatures and $4200, or 7,000 signatures. It's a ridiculously low barrier

My vote goes to Dan Kapelovitz! Yes, Dan, I CAN dig it!!

I was torn on voting for Chauncey “Slim” Killans but I don’t think he put as much effort into his slogan as Dan did.

I for one cannot wait till we get a new governor who receives fewer than half of the votes compared to people who want to keep Gavin Newsome.

So with one hundred signatures and $4200 in cash, I get my name on the CA governor recall ballot and voter guide with the description "I build little race cars out of my poop."
