The problem with banning everybody is, what do you do about the tens of thousands or more of Americans currently in Europe? Do you tell them not to come back, or if you take them in, do you quarantine them for two weeks like we did with Americans returning from Wuhan, China and the Diamond Princess ship in Japan? That was a big task requiring a lot of planning — you have to test them for Covid-19, fly them back, house them, feed them, watch them, and if anyone tested positive, you have to isolate and treat them first before quarantining. When the magnitude of that job hit them, instead of retreating, they did what they could by limiting the ban to foreigners. From a disease control point of view, it’s utterly dumb and useless. But that’s our President, dumb and useless.
I just heard the best summation of what's going on, though: this is not a travel-related disease. It's in the U.S. It's everywhere in the U.S. In the DC area, where I live, there have been more than a dozen people diagnosed. One of those people was an episcopal priest, who gave people communion potentially multiple weeks between the time he was exposed and the time he was diagnosed. There was an attendee at CPAC who was diagnosed; more than 10,000 people attended that conference from all over the country. I get that there are a lot of people in Italy who have the virus, but banning them from coming here isn't going to keep the virus out. The virus is already here.

In the first thousand cases? In a highly virulent airborne infection? That's terrifying.

Maybe suspend voting in November. You know...for the safety of everyone.

With that poster, I actually couldn't tell if he was being sarcastic, or if reality was starting to hit him.

Reality told me about 5,000 people (US) have already died from the common flu. And the CDC isn't even tracking it as closely as CV19.

My Tax Lady and her family moved a Germany a while back. I kneed to call her to see what's up now because she was coming back stateside to service her tax clients face to face and I have an appt with her later this month. I'm guessing she'll get screened before allowed entry. But then again, we may be able to do this via online so who knows....

That "the flu has killed more people" line is so idiotic that I get nauseous when I hear people repeating it over and over again. Do you understand mortality rates at all?

You do realize it's a containment attempt so it doesn't become as widespread as the flu right? Flu rarely kills 28 people in a single retirement home. On the flip side, flu normally kills more children.

But folks are right about the media stuff, the Media is the only reason Italy is on lock down, China was on lock down, places right outside of New York City are under containment, schools are going remote, and flights coming to the US are banned.

It's not like China had to build hospitals to keep the number of people alive that they did or anything.

Kinda. If the CDC says 5,000 died...that means 5,000 are dead, not breathing, etc.

On a similar note, let's see how many US deaths occur in the entire month of April.

There’s no arguing with stupid. Say we contain this and ‘only’ 100,000 US citizens get it and 2,000 people die. The ‘buh... buh... buh... but the flu’ morons will argue that action’s success is proof they were correct to advocate for inaction. And if we see millions get it and tens or hundreds of thousands die? The morons will just disappear into the woodwork, only to reemerge the next time there’s the opportunity to have an anti-knowledge hot take. Just ignore them.

I would love to ignore them, but they vote, and their ignorant leader is literally the President.

If nothing else, this pandemic may change some minds and hearts on the issue of Medicare for All. It's not the mortality rate that's the linchpin of this issue; it's that so many of the people who are going to fall sick with it have insufficient support systems. No health insurance, no paid sick leave, no access to the things everybody needs when they fall sick and can't work.

It's kind of funny to compare current flu deaths to current corona virus deaths. The top us health official says that the CV is 10x as lethal as the flu. If the CV becomes as common as the flu, those comparisons won't look quite so rosy.

The problem is the people who actually make decisions about healthcare won't be nearly as affected as those who don't.

For example, someone like AOC is vilified and mocked for her bartending background. Many of our leaders don't seem to care about people who don't have access to the same systems they do. Unfortunately, this won't change that.

Welp, my NY trip next month, along with seeing a couple Broadway shows, not looking so good...

Broadway Usher Tests Positive for COVID-19; Shows Will Still Go On
The part-time employee worked at the Booth Theatre and the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in the past two weeks.

They say "show must go on" for now, but does anyone doubt that they'll start canceling shows soon?

I think it's coming. I am probably not going to be taking my kids there the week of the 22nd. The whole point was to see a bunch of shows. We'll just have to find another time to go back.
