re: COVID-19 POLITICAL Thread

The big problem for the 2020 Olympics is not Japan but athletes and spectators coming to Japan for the Games.

Right now Japan is Covid-19 free and I am sure they can keep it that way for the next few months. All or most of the people infected were from that cruise ship that came to them, but the infected remained on the ship or were hospitalized after they got off.

The question is what they do with people coming from abroad for the Games. Right now many countries banned flights arriving from China and South Korea because they are considered high risk. Will Japan apply such a ban, and if they donít, they risk having Covid-19 brought to them by thousands of people. Itís impossible to screen everyone because the tests donít give back results right away, and thousands could be arriving all at once. And if they make a wrong call on just one person, that can put the entire country at high risk, just like with Korea last week.

Moving the Games wonít help because the problem is not Japan but the originating countries. Iíd hate to see the Games canceled. If it comes to that, postpone a month or push it to next year.

This is an event years in the making. You couldn't host it someplace else "tomorrow"

It's possible naturally; it's just a matter of time before a virus with the right mix of qualities - ease of transmission, long incubation period, rapid and high mortality - arises and when it happens hundreds of millions of people are fucked.

If you want to read up on it some more: Wikipedia - Coronavirus 2019

So it's a strain of SARS?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2,[7] a virus closely related to the SARS virus.[8][9][10] The disease is the cause of the 2019Ė20 coronavirus outbreak.[11][12] It is primarily spread between people by small droplets from infected individuals when they breathe or cough.[13][14] Time from exposure to onset of symptoms is generally between 2 and 14 days.[15][16] Hand washing, maintaining distance from people who are coughing, and not touching one's face is recommended to prevent the disease.[17] It is recommended to cover one's nose and mouth with a bent elbow when coughing.[18]

People may have few symptoms or develop fever, cough, and shortness of breath.[19][20][6] Cases can progress to pneumonia and multi-organ failure.[11][12] There is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, with management involving treatment of symptoms, supportive care, and experimental measures.[21] The case fatality rate is estimated at between 1% and 3%.[22][23]

The World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend those who suspect that they are carrying the virus wear a surgical face mask and seek medical advice by calling a doctor rather than directly visiting a clinic in person. Masks are also recommended for those who are taking care of someone with a suspected infection. Masks are not recommended for the general public.[24][25] The WHO has declared the 2019Ė20 coronavirus outbreak to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).[26][27] As of 19 February 2020, only Mainland China was listed as an area with known ongoing community spread of the disease.[28]

Tomorrow is a bit of an exaggeration, but LA already has all the venues necessary for an Olympics. It could be done.

Certain events would be outsourced to their respective Olympic training facility. Like white water rafting would be at the NC training facility.

The effort it would take to staff all the locations, get security, and secure lodging/transport/food for the 10's of thousands of people who attend would be massive. The city would grind to a complete stand-still without a lot of planning.

What exactly does LA offer that Tokyo doesnít have? Japan doesnít have a Covid-19 problem (except for that cruise ship which was well contained). Itís only some surrounding countries like China and South Korea. As far as I know, these viruses havenít learned to swim across seas yet.

I have a 24 day trip to Turkey and Greece in April. I'm not sure if I'll go. My biggest fear is contacting the virus and not be allowed back into the US.

Considering the current state of both countries, I'd say the virus would be the least of your potential issues, tbh.

My poor daughter had her flight out of Florence canceled today. Due to weather, not virus. Hoping to get her out tomorrow before this place becomes a Hot Zone.
Was supposed to vacation and see her in Europe really soon, but now don't know what I should do. Probably gonna cancel our trip. What a cluster fuck this has become.

How many people live in Japan? Just curious.

I'd still plan to go, but the problem might be many areas shut down due to precautions, so you'd be limited to Hotel fun and adventure. I dunno, Hotel Sushi might be awesome.

Thatís right, we were also planning Tokyo Disney for a week and Hiroshima. Just as a precaution, my company as of now asks employees to work from home 14 days if they go on trips to Asia. All business trips are cancelled, but leisure is not. The office is already trolling me on this since I planned this month long trip almost two years ago.

There's a lot worse places in the world to be stuck in than Florence.

Nothing if you stick to resorts and the islands. Athens and the more urban areas have become fairly unraveled since all the financial issues the Country had in the last decade or two.

I was a traveler when I was younger but I'm a tourist now. Good hotels, tour planned out and guides wherever I go. As far as the virus goes, I'm most afraid of catching it in the airports and on the planes. I'm not too confident in Turkish or Greek health care.

I wouldn't mind it. But a teenage girl with no place to stay who has been suddenly evacuated from her dorm room with no place to stay or eat at? That sucks.

Thanks. She's been sent to a nice hotel room tonight and will be (hopefully) flown out of Pisa tomorrow. Things are looking up a bit.
Still don't know if I should fly her all the way back to the US though and don't know for sure if school will resume in a month. The whole thing just sucks.
