Re: The One and Only 2020 Downballot Races Thread

I disagree.

I know people will eyeroll at the hyperbole, but this really is a war we are in. We are fighting for the future of this fragile republic. Trump was never the be all end all. He was a major Op against this democracy- but if he hadn't been installed in office, he would actually be far more powerful - over a longer period of time- then he will be now.

Everything looks dire from this vantage point, but I can imagine it being exponentially worse if we had a weakened Democrat and Congress controlled by Republicans, and bolstered non-stop by the right-wing media sphere. Of which Trump and his cult would now be a big, and unimpeachable, part of.

This is going to be messy, not easy, and not quick- but it needed to be done. Everything else would have just been applying band-aids to a limb suffering from gangrene.

Someone made an analogy that electing trump, for our nation, was akin to being cheated on in a relationship. You may be able to get back with your significant other afterwards, but the dynamic and broken trust will be forever changed.

Congressman Peter King of NY is retiring in 2020. A very winnable district now for the Dem's,it's Republican leaning but Trump is beyond underwater here and will be a drag in a district like this in a way a Generic Republican President wouldn't be.

That only happens (millions of times) in Presidential elections.

Didn't he just say that he'd rather win an honest election than a fraudulent one when it came to him contesting this and the recount? So there were no fraudulent votes. Good, get that shit outta here and don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Louisiana's Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards defeats Trump-backed businessman in close race. Trump won the state by 20 points and held two rallies in the last ten days but it was not enough.

Edwards opposes gun control, signed a strict abortion ban and doesnít agree with Trumpís impeachment. Sounds like a Republican won anyway.

It's Louisiana, not Washington state. He would have lost if he said some of the things Beto O'Rourke said (and I like Beto!)

Don't you know, rural Americans are the salt of the earth and are real Americans compared to urban/metropolitan dwellers.

I'll take it. It's one step in changing the "optics" that if Trump opposes you, you lose, or if Trump supports you and holds rallies for you, you win. That will drive more Republicans to think that they don't need Trump to win.

Exactly, Trumpís last two candidates lost, this last one in a deeply red state that Trump won by 20 points. Trump appears to not have coat tails strong enough to carry you to a win. In fact it appears in some cases tying yourself to Trump is a bad thing.

I heard a radio interview the other day with a pollster who said the red/blue divide in 2020 looks like it could cause Trump to win by bigger margins in crucial swing states (where he very narrowly won in 2016) while also losing the popular vote by an even bigger margin than before.

So, yeah, because of the undemocratic electoral college and the undemocratic Senate, the Democrats being out of touch with rural voters is a much more significant issue.

It only really matters if it affects SENATORS. They are the only ones who can get rid of Trump. Trump would like to have his picks win governorships (because he doesnít accept losing) but it ultimately doesnít matter to his longevity as President.

Until a Republican Senator publicly opposes Trump AND wins re-election, we donít know what the affect actually is. And individual states are very different from the whole country.

Small steps at a time. We need to change the thinking that Trump is invincible, that he gets anything he wants, or that for the GOP it's Trump or lose. That thinking applies to all levels, not any particular election. And Mitch Romney was a Senate candidate who spoke out against Trump before his election -- sure he didn't go as far as some might have wanted, but he didn't hide his disdain for Trump either.

Not wasting time making a positive impact. But like whomever comes after Trump, Bevin set the bar is set so low, it would be hard to not to improve the state in the first few hours of his term.

Re: The One and Only 2020 Downballot Races Thread

Rep. Phil Roe (R-Tenn.) announced his retirement on Friday morning, making him the 22nd Republican member of Congress who has announced their retirement during the 116th session of Congress.
[ ]
However, Roe’s district is a deep red district that Trump carried with 75% of the votes and there’s little chance that a Democrat will be able to flip the district, which lies in northeast Tennessee.

According to Roll Call, the average number of members of Congress to retire during an election cycle is only 23, meaning that this cycle has far surpassed the average.

So much of the last three years will seem so obvious in retrospect.

A 4 point lead according to "left-leaning Public Policy Polling."

Elise Stefanik - Trumps new best supporter has raised a ton of money for her campaign.

big battle

Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-Schuylerville, and Democratic challenger Tedra Cobb broke fundraising records in the fourth quarter of 2019, with Stefanik pulling in $3.2 million and Cobb $2.05 million.

For both candidates, this is the most that they have ever raised in a quarter.

Stefanik has nearly $3.4 million cash on hand at this point and received donations from each of the 12 counties in the NY-21 Congressional District, and has over 50,000 new donors, according to a news release from the campaign. The average donation is $50.

Cobb has nearly $2.2 million on hand for her campaign and has raised over $2.7 million for this election cycle. She has received contributions from over 63,000 people from over 50 states. The average donation was $27.50, according to a news release.

One of the very possible senate seats for the Democrats to flip, thanks to how well Mark Kelly is doing:

With a 52 percent disapproval rating, Susan Collins (R-Maine) is now the most unpopular senator in the country.
