So changing ‘the polar ice cap may melt in 5 years’ to ‘the world will end in 10 years’ nails it as an example of what? Claiming someone you disagree with holds a more extreme position than they profess and then criticizing their imagined level of extremism and bemoaning how extreme people’s positions are?

Actually, I should rephrase. Most local people were against handing over 3b in subsidies to one of the largest corporations in the world when their communities are in dire need of that money.

I read another big worry was that the deal was going to just cause massive rent increases, and they were worried about New York turning into San Francisco.

Yep. Lower priced housing would have ballooned into in-demand housing for newly moved in employees. Basically, if you didn't work at the HQ making a good salary, it would have become much harder to make ends meat. Seattle knows this all too well.

It'll still function as a good talking point. The GOP can blame her, rather than Amazon. That's essentially what seems to be happening in Wisconsin with Foxconn. Despite their history of getting lucrative deals, then backing out of their end, Wisconsin's new Democratic governor is being blamed for them completely changing their plans in WI.

GOP can do whatever they want since Amazon will still build in the US; just not NY. The people she represents will be better off for it.

Re: The One and Only Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Obsession Thread

just got this from another spot:

NYC would benefit from 25,000 permanent well paying jobs
In addition to the permanent jobs, NYC would benefit from thousands of construction jobs.

The locals were to have free training so that they would be have the prerequisite skills to obtain the employment opportunity

Increased Real Estate taxes

Increased Employment and payroll taxes

Increased Income taxes on those working in the facility

Increased activity and local spending by the Amazon employees.

Improved rail and ferry access to NYC.

Improved infrastructure.

New businesses moving in that are ancillary to Amazon
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her constituents are going to be sorely disappointed if they believe that the incentive money will now go to low income housing. The money does not exist. It came in tax reductions, Bonding, Infrastructure spending etc

I’ve never once seen one. Only on the news. And I travel a lot. And I travel to a lot of rural places.

And I live in a very conservative town. Never seen one. I’ve seen teens in “Reagan/Bush in 1984” shirts. It was a retro trend a few years back. I’ve never seen a hat.

In Oklahoma I have seen a few MAGA hats being worn by old white men. I have seen more of these on cars though.

Well, Toronto was also one of the finalists too, but I'm guessing they don't have much of a shot at this point.

thats all well and good. AOC says now they can spend the 3 billion that they were going to give Amazon to now the housing and local projects. There was no 3 billion to give. So how does she expect this to happen?

Yeah, I agree; the "3 billion" is tax money that Amazon WOULDN'T have had to pay. But hey, it's just like when a store advertises "Save $$$$" at some sale. You aren't saving money, you're SPENDING it. Just not as much as if you'd paid regular price. But you're still not saving a damn thing.

The argument I am reading here and in some other online commentary is that the $3B is an amount in taxes and fees (and the like) that Amazon would have had to pay NYC and NY State to get the HQ built and running.
And that the NYs were willing to forego all that money on the front end because they would be taking in many many more billions of dollars in taxes in the long run from Amazon, along with the income taxes on Amazon employees, as well as any ancillary economic development in the area due to the HQ.

And so the NYs are not saving any money that they can otherwise spend.

BY analogy, If the posted rate for a hotel room is $100 a night, and they let me have it for $70. They did not give me $30. They let me keep $30. If I never rent the room at all, the $30 does not exist at all as far as the hotel is concerned.

I am going to say that I am suspicious about reducing such a complicated economic negotiation into such simple terms, however.

If the deal was as straight-forward in theory as I just described, and others are claiming it to be, there is no way anyone of any authority could say that the NYs just saved $$ or that they had been poised to give away $$. There are too many intelligent and honest brokers out there (in the media, for example) to ever let such clearly wrong-headed claims fly.

The idea is that other companies will fill in that void, but pay their taxes instead of asking for a $3B tax break. I don't know if that's true, but it's a reasonable argument.

That shows how dumb Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is, in that she doesn't know what the people in line were doing and she has to "ask her staff" why they were there.

Just saving some typing for Grundle. You're welcome, G.

You'd think those homeless people were standing in line for the hipsters trying to buy new iphones.

Thanks, we're fine, just fine. Toronto didn't offer tax breaks of any sort. The mayor said the same offer's still open, but I think we're much better off without Amazon.

AOC's can-do attitude is a breath of fresh air, but I don't know if she can persuade or engage enough of the populace in a country so long entrenched in laissez-faire, dog-eat-dog capitalism and ugly, destructive politics.

Actually. since she's new in Congress, I wouldn't expect her (or anyone else who was new) to know what those people waiting in line were doing. I think it's perfectly reasonable she she asked.
