Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

I think these researchers are on to something. The concept of "blue lies" explains why some smart people support Trump, even though they know he's a pathological liar. At the same time, there are suckers who actually believe his lies. The key is that they're all on the same team, and Trump is their MVP.

How the Science of "Blue Lies" May Explain Trump's Support at ScientificAmerican.com

How does the former reality-TV star get away with it? How can he tell so many lies and still win support from many Americans?

Journalists and researchers have suggested many answers, from a hyperbiased, segmented media to simple ignorance on the part of GOP voters. But there is another explanation that no one seems to have entertained. It is that Trump is telling “blue lies”—a psychologist’s term for falsehoods, told on behalf of a group, that can actually strengthen bonds among the members of that group.

Children start to tell selfish lies at about age three, when they discover adults cannot read their minds: I didn’t steal that toy. Daddy said I could. He hit me first. At around age seven, they begin to tell white lies motivated by feelings of empathy and compassion: That’s a good drawing. I love socks for Christmas. You’re funny.

Blue lies are a different category altogether, simultaneously selfish and beneficial to others—but only to those who belong to your group. As University of Toronto psychologist Kang Lee explains, blue lies fall in between generous white lies and selfish “black” ones. “You can tell a blue lie against another group,” he says, which makes it simultaneously selfless and self-serving. “For example, you can lie about your team’s cheating in a game, which is antisocial but helps your team.”
“People condone lying against enemy nations, and since many people now see those on the other side of American politics as enemies, they may feel that lies, when they recognize them, are appropriate means of warfare,” says George Edwards, a political scientist at Texas A&M University and one of the country’s leading scholars of the presidency.

If we see Trump’s lies not as failures of character but rather as weapons of war, then we can come to see why his supporters might view him as an effective leader. From this perspective, lying is a feature, not a bug, of Trump’s campaign and presidency.
This kind of lying seems to thrive in an atmosphere of anger, resentment and hyperpolarization. Party identification is so strong that criticism of the party feels like a threat to the self, which triggers a host of defensive psychological mechanisms.

For millions and millions of Americans, climate change is a hoax, Hillary Clinton ran a child sex ring out of a pizza parlor and immigrants cause crime. Whether they truly believe those falsehoods or not is debatable—and possibly irrelevant. The research to date suggests that they see those lies as useful weapons in a tribal us-against-them competition that pits the “real America” against those who would destroy it.

Tentative agreement in Congress to avert another government shutdown. Trump still has to agree, but after the previous shutdown, I think he'll be forced to accept it. He could easily have gotten a lot more than this in December, but I think he underestimated Pelosi and the Democrats. He's better get used to this new reality fast.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...oaches-n970046

  • $1.375 billion for border barrier enhancements like steel slats and other "existing technologies," but no concrete wall
  • The money would fund about 55 miles of new barrier
  • Geographic restrictions on where the new fencing could built, likely limited to the Rio Grand Valley sector of the border
  • DHS would receive $1.7 billion in new funding for border security that could include technology at ports of entry, additional customs officers and humanitarian aid
  • No cap on the number of beds for enforcing immigration laws in the country's interior
  • Funding for approximately 40,520 detention beds for detained immigrants

I think he should take it. I’m against adding any fencing. But I guess the 55 miles is throwing him a bone to save face since he spoke about a concrete wall “sea to shinning sea”. I do like the restrictions on where to build. Stay out of the National Park, don’t steal people’s land, etc...

Wait a second, did Trump’s plan to build a concrete wall include walling off the state of Florida to make it to the Atlantic Ocean? Cause if so, I may have to change my mind about this whole “wall” business.

That’s really interesting. I’ve never heard the term “blue lie” before, but I saw this in effect during the Bush II administration.

When conservatives I knew, who excoriated Bill Clinton for telling lies for eight years, were confronted about Bush’s blatant falsehoods and lies pertaining to the Iraq war, would simply shrug and say he was telling us what we needed to hear.

Of course, now those same people, when confronted over Trump’s constant stream of lies, will only reply with “Fuck you.”

Sorry President Hannity says No Deal!

Sean Hannity slams ‘garbage compromise’ on preliminary agreement on border security

Sean Hannity, the Fox News host, on Monday blasted the “garbage compromise” after congressional negotiators said they reached an “agreement in principle” on border security funding that includes more than $1.3 billion for physical barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border.During his Monday night broadcast, Hannity broke into President Trump’s speech in El Paso, Texas, to criticize the reported deal to avoid a second government shutdown.

Surprised the security there escorted him out. I would have thought he would be brought on stage with Trump to a standing ovation.

White lies, black lies, blue lies ... the operative part of those terms is still "lies".

The difference is that the scope and frequency of the lies told by Donald Trump has reached a new (frightening) level when compared to previous politicans.

Trump made sure to praise Gianforte for bodyslamming a reporter. What's the difference here? They are the enemy of the people after all.

I like that the L.A. Times is being more blunt in how they report it. This was on the front page today (yes, a few of us still read an actual paper!):

"President Trump falsely told a raucous rally in El Paso on Monday night that he is already building a wall on the adjacent border with Mexico..." (First paragraph. Bolding is mine)

"Trump hailed what he called a “big, beautiful wall right on the Rio Grande,” though no such construction is known to be underway."

The whole article is HERE

If Trump signs off on this deal, he'll have gotten funding for building steel slats along 2.75% of the length of the border. Sure the MAGA crowd is going to love that.

That's the problem with these rallies and zero press briefings. No one can ever directly challenge Trump or his spokespeople on these lies. By the time a briefing is held, there's a month+ worth of stuff to ask about.

This is why the media shouldn't be covering his rallies.

Ultimately, he got something and hopefully it's enough for him to cry victory so we can move past this.

They shouldn't? The President of the United States gets up in front a thousands of people to spout racism madness and the media should skip it?

Just because they can't ask questions, doesn't mean they shouldn't show the American people what the President is doing.

He's not going to be able to cry victory if his base, Hannity and Coulter shit all over it. He promised a great wall. How he can spin 1/40th of the border as being a victory is hard to fathom.

Re: Official Trump Presidency Thread, Part 3

Just came across this article. So Beto had a bigger crowd by a factor of nearly 2? Bolding below is mine..

https://shareblue.com/el-paso-fire-d...uTvqxUDRfjoTKY

Trump lied about how many people attended his rally. The fire department obliterated the fabrication immediately.

The fire department in El Paso, Texas, called out Trump for lying and inflating the number of people who attended his rally there Monday night.

During his rally, Trump attacked former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who also held a rally protesting Trump’s racist border wall and his policy of stealing migrant children from their families.

“A young man who’s got very little going for himself, except he’s got a great first name, he is, he has challenged us. So we have, let’s say, 35,000 people tonight — and he has 200 people, 300 people, not too good,” Trump whined.

That was a lie.

“El Paso Fire Department just told us that Trump’s statement about them allowing 10,000 people inside is incorrect,”
Zahira Torres of the El Paso Times. “Spokesman says coliseum holds 6,500 and that is how many were allowed in building.”

At O’Rourke’s rally, on the other hand, police
a crowd of “10,000 to 15,000” people
.

In other words, the crowd Trump mocked was bigger than his own rally.

Trump is a serial liar, who often lies about easily disprovable things like crowd size. He didn’t have to lie about how many people came to his rally, or to O’Rourke’s event. But Trump regularly exaggerates his crowd sizes, and he did so again Monday night.

This time, the lie was quickly debunked by a local fire department.

You know his limited reading comprehension ... he thought he was getting another $3 billion for sluts. “And I can grab them wherever I want. More sluts than any other President ever in history entirely, believe me!”
