If I recall correctly a player was knifed in the back.

That wasn’t exactly what I meant.

This doesn’t happen with “real” athletes for numerous reasons. Gaming is not a sport because basement dwellers and unhinged anti-social types can succeed at it.

This also continues to make colleges who offer scholarships for Fortnight and other violent video games look pretty dreadfully out of step.

Poker's not a sport, either, then.
or bowling
or car racing
or hunting

or shooting

That was in Germany. And that was a crazy fan stalker. This was one gamer lost and came back to kill the winner. Reminds me of the beginning of The Last Boy Scout.

Bowling and car racing? Maybe. The others? Definitely not sports.

Why is there bickering back and forth over irrelevant shit when the culprit here is guns?

Driving is not a sport. Eating is not a sport. Surfing is not a sport. People have created competitive forms of those activities but they’re not really sport.

But indoor drone racing is definitely a sport.

Because I’ve written endlessly about guns. At this point it bores me. For the last couple years all I’ve done is copy paste old essays I wrote years ago.

We can't give up hope that something will be done about this. Yes, the gun problem needs addressed, but that’s only looking at one part of the issue. There has to be a reason a majority of these shootings are being carried out by young white males.

You need to acquaint yourself with the violent crime statistics for football players.

It doesn’t matter. We’ve tried. Actually encouraging children to tackle each other is somehow less violent than playing a video game. It’s nonsense, of course.

Is golf a sport? Just curious.

Re: Mass Shootings [Merged]

Mental health issues seem to be increasing steadily all over the world and healthcare systems aren't equipped to handle it, not counting the thousands upon thousands of undiagnosed/untreated cases that can just totally spiral out of control. This will be no picnic for anyone, but a country with tons of guns and very easy access to them will end up getting fucked the worse, we are seeing little examples of this every week at a seemingly increasing rate.

Re: Mass Shootings [Merged]

The classic sports are demonstrations of strength, speed, and war ability. Running, swimming, jumping, boxing, fencing, horseback riding, etc.

Games can be sports. Games are typically very old and bound by lots of rules. In this sense golf, tennis, and billiards are sports. Bowling too I guess.

This brings us to activities. Activities are every day things humans do for survival or entertainment. Catching fish for dinner, climbing a mountain, surfing, diving to a sunken wreck, hunting a turkey for dinner, driving a motor car, eating. These are activities. We do them to survive, explore, or the simple satisfaction of being active. People have devised ways of turning these activities into sports, some successfully, but most not so successfully.

I could more easily argue that things like fishing and surfing are actually art rather than sport. Where the sport version of the activity is actually a perversion of the essence of the activity.

Over the years what were once considered competitive leisure time activities have been brought under the umbrella of "sports." Are beer pong, tiddlywinks, pinball considered "sports?" Many people would probably say "yes." Is the hot dog eating champion at Nathan's 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest an athlete and competing in a sport?

Yes, mental health issues are increasing as is the world's population. What to do? Level off the population growth on Earth or increase spending to mental health facilities?

Only because they can't hide a gun in their uniforms.

But they still manage to do things like murder referees

Re: Mass Shootings [Merged]

Out of sensitivity to the victims, can we maybe take the discussion of what is or is not a sports to another thread?

What does the current discussion have to do with this most recent mass shooting?
