Barcelona: Van hits crowd near Las Ramblas tourist spot

A van plowed into a crowd of people in Barcelona, injuring several people, in what is "most likely" a terror attack, a Catalan police spokesman told CNN.

The incident took place Thursday afternoon near the popular tourist area of Las Ramblas, which has been sealed off, according to a police spokesman.
Officials said several people have been injured. They were unable to give a motive for the incident.

Catalan police told everyone in the vicinity of Plaça de Catalunya to remain inside.

Reuters reported that local emergency services have requested the closure of metro and train stations in the vicinity of the incident. Police told people to avoid the area.

A witness told local media the situation was "very tense" and that all surrounding shops were being evacuated. The witness said at least eight ambulances were at the scene. Emergency services said the area had been cordoned off and all public transportation stopped.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted: "In contact with all administrations. Priority: tend to the injured in Las Ramblas and facilitate the work of security forces."

The US Consulate in Barcelona posted on Twitter: "We are aware of a reported incident at Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Please avoid the area and monitor local police @mossos for updates."

Developing story - more to come

I've been there. Easy attack spot... if that is what it is...

Before I decide whether to be upset about this, I need to know whether the tourists were on the sidewalk or in the street.

Horrific and yes an incredibly busy spot where it's easy to get on the busy busy sidewalk.

2 guys holed up in a bar now apparently.

I don't understand people.

The van jumped the sidewalk so it was not their fault.

Yea... that area has median splitting the two sides of the street where there are vendors and restaurants with outdoor tables.

Spanish police have confirmed that the attack was deliberate. Two gunmen are holed up in a restaurant and there were reports of shots fired near the restaurant but this was not confirmed.

There is also an unconfirmed report that a group of children may have been among those hit by the vehicle.

Damn. I've never been but I know of that area thanks to the Dream Team. That's where all the partying was.

I think the tourists share some of the blame for the incident...for being there.

Re: Barcelona: Van hits crowd near Las Ramblas tourist spot

I have so many great memories from that area that I'm not sure I want to see any of the news footage for fear it will taint those memories.

I've read reports that two suspects are still alive. Hopefully they are taken down before even more innocent lives are lost.

It's pretty sad that we no longer have a president who can make a credible comment at times like these.

Seems like this may be false. Local police are still going with 1 dead, 32+ injured.

From the Guardian (32 minutes old):

Police have confirmed that one person has died and that 32 people have been injured, 10 of them seriously.

There has been some confusion, as is typical in these situations, about the number of fatalities. Local media outlets are reporting that 13 have died, citing police sources. Other media, including El Pais, are saying there were at least 10 deaths.

Last year, I booked my trip to Turkey and then a day later there was a bombing near the Blue Mosque. I went anyway. So now, I just booked my trip to Barcelona and this happens. Well, doesn't deter me from going, but damn... as if it wasn't enough to look out for pickpockets.

We can look to other responsible world leaders to fill that void and we can lean on each other in times like this.

Well the odds work out in your favour. Much smaller chance of another terrorist attack happening in the same place so soon after the previous one.

Kinda like the best time to fly a specific airline is soon after they crashed a plane... unless it's Air Malaysia - just avoid them altogether.

The name of the man who rented the van and his picture. Not yet confirmed to be directly involved, but seems likely. Possibly of Moroccan descent but not yet confirmed either:

Seeing how far he drove down las ramblas is kind of horrifying. Was just there in July, didn't spend a ton of time on that street, because its a shit show, but still fuck.

I was there last year and explored around this area... walking the streets. It is a crowded shit show for sure. Surprised they don't have barricades around the area.

I've been considering a trip that stops here as well. This attack won't deter me from doing so but it sure doesn't seem like many of the others who posted in this thread that have been there think very highly of it.

If it's a wretched hive of scum and villainy then maybe I'll just pass.. I've seen enough of that in my travels.

Seems like its similar to every other tourist trap in EU. Too many people, too many cheap products being pushed in your face, too many pickpockets trying to grab your shit.

As with pretty much everywhere else, the beauty lies outside the touristy areas.

Of course he will. The suspects aren't white GOP voters...
