Should we just get rid of the States and become America?

Is it time to just ditch the idea of states and become one nation?

After all, this whole notion of states gave us President Orange.

Some states don't even make sense, they're so different.

Take Florida...(please!). You've got the redneck panhandle, the Cuban south, and the boring suburbanites stuck in the middle between beach bums on the right and rich folks on the left. (Then you've got Jacksonville...the less said the better).

Your Presidential vote is worthless in at least half the states - they're either red or blue.

Do you mean a title change, or do you propose getting rid of having two senators from each state?

Re: Should we just get rid of the States and become America?

Most countries have regions, counties, or some way of partitioning their lands. I don't think you have have a country the size of the US and not have some sort of state/province kind of setup.

Now if you're saying that you want to get rid of the electoral college, I wouldn't be opposed to that. Twice in the last 20 years it has not represented the will of the people. I think it's an antiquated system and most other countries don't have something like this.

I'm down for both.

Electoral college is one thing, but state laws are quite another. As someone who has lived in both the restrictive, conservative Midwest and the more secular, more progressive West, I am glad different regions feel entitled to adopt different laws under the protection of a nationwide Constitutional system of rules.

If, for example, someone could give me one logical reason why in certain Midwestern states you are prohibited from buying alcohol on Sunday or on Christmas Day that doesn't involve religion, I am eager to hear it.

Why should Wyoming (pop. 585 thousand) have equal representation in the Senate with California (pop. 39 million)? Makes no sense.

There is a huge difference between federalism (the system by which power is shared between the federal government and the state governments) and bicameralism (the system by which there are two houses of a legislature). You seem to be conflating the two.

No. But like others I'm down with dumping the electoral college and any state laws that are an establishment of religion and/or restrict the rights of the citizens.

Sorry, 'America' is already taken. But we can give you 'The Southern part of North America', AKA 'SPNA' or 'The Republic of SPNA'.

Panama would object.

We recently saw an advantage of the 10th Amendment. One by one, individual states allowed gay marriage. It forced the issue. If we had to wait for Congress to allow it, we'd still be waiting.

Hell no. Far to big a gap in people's lives across the country to have one voice for all. What's wanted for people in MS most likely doesn't align with the people of NY, for example.

I like it that minority states have a say in the Senate. Otherwise, New York would accumulate vast wealth at the expense of the smaller states, and New Mexico would be used for burying California's nuclear waste.

Because without the Senate to give all states an equal voice regardless of population, small states would not have their concerns addressed sufficiently in the House, where representatives are allotted by population. And since neither the Senate nor the House can pass legislation unilaterally, this provides a balance. It's not a perfect system, especially since the purpose of the Senate was to carefully consider legislation that the more populist House may simply rubber stamp (this is why initially Senators were chosen by their state legislatures and not through direct popular elections), and much of that sense of consideration has been lost. Now the Senate is as rash and rushed as the House is, but it's not a reason to remove the Senate completely.

This whole notion thing gave us Obama, too.

There was life before Trump. There will be life after Trump.

But I'm sure in 2020 you'll want the whole Notion of States thing to come back rather quickly.

Obama won pop vote both times. State/district lines didn't give us his presidency.

Is this the new argument? That life will still exist after Trump so he's cool? Life existed after World War II, so it was a cool thing.

Every day it seems the comparisons to 1984 are becoming more accurate. Just keep looking at your phones, sheep. Everything will be fine...

Stop bringing up the past (Slavery, the Holocaust, etc...), just get over it already! Don't listen to George Santayana.

Hmm. What to do, what to do....

How about we just abolish "America" (the federal government) and just go back to being individual colonies?
