RIP Senator John McCain 1936-2018

U.S. Senator John McCain was found to have a brain tumor, according to a Wednesday statement released by his office.

Washington, D.C. * At the request of Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and his family, Mayo Clinic released the following statement today:

"On Friday, July 14, Sen. John McCain underwent a procedure to remove a blood clot from above his left eye at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. Subsequent tissue pathology revealed that a primary brain tumor known as a glioblastoma was associated with the blood clot.

"Scanning done since the procedure (a minimally invasive craniotomy with an eyebrow incision) shows that the tissue of concern was completely resected by imaging criteria.

"The Senator and his family are reviewing further treatment options with his Mayo Clinic care team. Treatment options may include a combination of chemotherapy and radiation.

"The Senator's doctors say he is recovering from his surgery 'amazingly well' and his underlying health is excellent."

The office of Senator John McCain also released the following statement:

"Senator McCain appreciates the outpouring of support he has received over the last few days. He is in good spirits as he continues to recover at home with his family in Arizona. He is grateful to the doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic for their outstanding care, and is confident that any future treatment will be effective. Further consultations with Senator McCain's Mayo Clinic care team will indicate when he will return to the United States Senate."

I wish him a speedy and full recovery, but my understanding is glioblastomas are usually fatal within a year. I hope I'm misinformed about that.

I don't think you're wrong

This is sad. I don't agree with his politics, but he genuinely seems like a good guy.

Sad -and based on what the procedure was, not totally unexpected . Hope he can live in peace.

re: RIP Senator John McCain 1936-2018

I've been generally happy with my senator. I could be living anywhere with a senator I don't like. But I don't have any real problems with what he's done in AZ.

It's unfortunate to hear. But he's 80. It's not shocking.

Technical question: if he no longer serves, which person takes over?

Another technical question: does this have something to do with the stroke-like responses during the Russia investigation a month or two ago?

Sad, i don't know how the rules of the senate would work, but will he keep His seat or resign and there will be a special election for it?

A sad prognosis. I've waffled over the years on my feelings about his politics but always had a sense of respect for him. I wish him and his family the best. Cancer sucks.

In Arizona, the Governor appoints a replacement. The replacement has to be the same party as the previous Senator (Republican in this case). Then, at the next election, voters elect someone who serves the remainder of the term. McCain was just re-elected in 2016, so whoever wins in 2018 would serve until 2022, at which point he or she could run on his or her own.

I've liked McCain for a long time. I think he's served his country well.

I doubt that an old man will be able to undergo brain surgery and be able to come back to do his job as a senator.

Nope. Glioblastomas are more fatal than even pancreatic cancer. It killed Beau Biden and Ted Kennedy.

What shitty news. McCain can be a little flaky and a bit of a war monger, but overall I think he's been a good senator for the people of Arizona and the country. Hopefully he can pull through.

I hope McCain gets the same sympathetic and efficient care from the Veteran's Administration that he was responsible for when Veterans died under his watch.

But I kinda doubt it.

Well said, Mr. President. Here's hoping McCain pulls through. We need Repubs like him.

I'm very sorry to hear this news. He was in the wrong party but he wasn't batshit insane like some of his cohorts.

I overheard CNN's Gupta saying the average was 14 months, potentially up to five years. It's a very dire prognosis.

I liked him better before he ran for president and started towing the corporate line to get the nomination.

But that moment in the campaign where he told the lady Obama wasn't an Arab or a Muslim was pretty classy.

Hope he gets better. Fuck cancer.

Sorry to hear this. His ability to condemn something and then tow the party line on that thing made me not like him. However, I wish this didn't happen to him or anyone for that matter. Also someone far worse than him will probably take his seat.

Yeah most likely. McCain is a throwback to an era when Congress actually worked.

Yup. That was my first thought and then I thought about all the people who made fun of him for it and wondering what they thought now with this news.
