I'm not so sure. That is at least what is touted as the primary reason the Religious Right faction of the GOP looks the other way on all of Trump's indiscretions and keeps supporting him. And there are a lot of that faction in rural Missouri.

No and yes. I don't think they care as much about the Supreme Court in general, as much as they care about one particular issue...

Now that I concur with, especially given that the other two branches of our federal government seem to have lost sight of what the Supreme Court is.

Well I think it's more indirect than that. People aren't thinking "if I vote for a Republican he will nominate conservative justices who may reverse Roe vs. Wade" they are thinking "If I vote for a Republican he will work to end abortion". They don't care how the sausage gets made, so to speak.

Re: 2018 Congressional, Governor, etc election thread

Potentially breaking the law to own the libs!

Republican pair apparently pose as communists to make Democratic donation
Men visit office of Arizona’s Tom O’Halleran with jar of money in apparent effort to create link to far-left
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...nation-attempt

Two young Arizona Republicans tried to make a donation to a Democratic congressman as members of the Communist party in an apparent attempt to tie him to the far left.

On Friday afternoon, two men who called themselves Jose Rosales and Ahmahd Sadia walked into the campaign office of first-term Democrat Tom O’Halleran with $39.68 and an urgent desire for the Northern Arizona University Communist party to be given a receipt for the donation.

The pair initially walked in to sign up to volunteer but had brought along a jar full of money that they wished to donate. After being directed to a finance staffer, they were told to fill out paperwork. In doing so, they identified themselves as members of the Northern Arizona University Communist party. They made clear they were not an official group but were holding meetings. But they also insisted upon a receipt.

When told they get only an emailed receipt, Rosales immediately scratched out one email and wrote another. The entire process raised eyebrows among O’Halleran’s staff.

Lindsay Coleman, the finance director for the campaign, then drove to the local Republican field office to return the money. Almost immediately, the man who identified himself as Rosales appeared from a room inside the office and was identified as Oscar. He accepted the money from Coleman.

Speaking to the Guardian, Coleman identified the second man as a field organizer for the Arizona Republican party and said Ahmahd Sadia was not his real name. Neither the Arizona Republican party nor Wendy Rogers, O’Halleran’s Republican opponent for Congress, responded to requests for comment.

Making federal campaign contributions under a false identity is a crime. However, as a dirty trick, the attempt to smear opponents by linking them to unsavory political groups has a long history. In 1972, Roger Stone, then a young campaign staffer for Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign, sent a donation to Nixon’s anti-war primary opponent in the name of the Young Socialist Alliance. Stone went on to serve as Donald Trump’s longtime political adviser, a role he left early in Trump’s presidential campaign.

The rural Arizona district was narrowly won by both Donald Trump in 2016 and Mitt Romney in 2012. However, the non-partisan Cook Political Report classifies the race as Likely Democratic.

Wow what a plot. A whole $39.68. Couldn't ramp it up to an even $40?

Please stop donating to Beto, and consider donating to Heidi Heitkamp or Clair McCaskill.

Damn, one of the seats the Democrats are hoping to flip in California (48th) is now even.

How anyone could possibly vote for Putin lover, Dana Rohrabacher, is beyond me.

How bad are Rohrabacher's pro Russia leanings? From the NY Times:

"Mr. Rohrabacher was told by the F.B.I. that the Kremlin considered him such a valuable intelligence asset that they gave him a code name. The Republican House majority leader joked that Mr. Rohrabacher was paid by the Russians."

Rohrbacher's currently exploiting his daughter's illness by falsely claiming he's for covering preexisting conditions after he voted for the AHCA which would result in 23 million people losing coverage for preexisting conditions.

What a class act.

I think flipping his seat would be historic because of the Republican 10pt registration advantage. I think the old record is still my district that had a 7pt Republican advantage when we voted out the incumbent Republican.

Re: 2018 Congressional, Governor, etc election thread

538's projections re: House/Senate have been updated.

Democrats now have a 7 in 9 chance of winning the House, up from 3 in 4.
GOP now has a 4 in 5 chance of holding the Senate, up from 3 in 4.

The Heitkamp race has tightened up again. She was down in the low-ish 40s just a week or so ago but is now polling at 48.3% and has a 1 in 3 chance according to 538. OTOH, they also have Beto slipping in Texas, now down to just 2 in 9.

I'm starting to get "Vote for Beto" text messages on my phone. I am pro-Beto but it's annoying. I can imagine how much it might upset other people.

Everybody knows Beto can’t win. This is just a prologue for a 2020 presidential bid.

What works for him is that Republicans I talk to (and there are many around here) don't seem to hate him or think that he is a leftist commie libtard, weak on defense and weak on immigration. They do see him as one of "us Texans,"

If Cruz does something stupid to turn people off, they don't have to make a very big jump to vote for Beto. I think that's one reason Cruz has been quiet, hoping that people vote for him because he is GOP and not because he is Cruz.

And the (hopefully) increased Dem/liberal voter turnout that he inspires in this election should help down-ballot Democratic candidates. We have straight-ticket ballot options in Texas, so if a lot of "Beto voters" show up and check the Democratic Party box, that could give make the difference in some competitive House and state races.

My senator, Martin Heinrich (D), has such a lock on the polls that I realized this week that I haven't seen a Republican ad yet. The national party and the PACs have abandoned his challenger.

Meanwhile, the ads for governor are running next to late night ads for mail order nonstick pans.
