It's baby steps to normalize outright racism. This stuff isn't accidental; they're pushing the envelope a little further each time to move the window. Before long they're going to be using the n-word openly.

But using or possessing them? Yeah, maybe a moderate fine (proportional to the person's income), but not jail time.

I am in favor of legalizing marijuana nationally. I am in favor of regulating the industry and taxing it (but not so heavily that street level marijuana is significantly cheaper).

But cocaine? Meth? Or, especially, heroin? Hell no. Too many people end up dead from using that stuff.

Marijuana isn't even as bad as alcohol, so unless people are willing to give prohibition another try making marijuana illegal is hypocritical and stupid.
A lot of those street drugs cause deaths specifically because they are illegal. If they were legal, and pure, we wouldn't have so many problems and deaths with them.

Also, I find it quite a bit of a double-standard to believe dealers should be arrested, but not users, because the drug is illegal. Without demand, there is no supply. Why is that?

How do you feel about illegal immigrant workers? Following your original thoughts, should we arrest the employers, or continue to only punish the workers? It seems the Republican strategy is tightening up borders, but if there was no demand for the workers, they wouldn't come here. So why don't we only punish the companies?

Opinion article.

Andrew Gillum’s theory is that he can win the Florida gubernatorial race by turning out the “largely black voters, brown voters, younger voters and poor voters” who make up the Democratic base in the large, diverse and always-brutally-contested swing state of Florida.

Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, is an African American with a working-class background who is campaigning on Medicare for All, a $15-per-hour minimum wage, abolishing the chief federal immigration enforcement agency in its current form and corporate tax hikes to fund education.

Re: 2018 Congressional, Governor, etc election thread

Wow, Cruz camp is REALLY bad at this...

This below explains why they're so bad at this (being Texas, they've never had a competitive campaign), and why someone as unlikable as Cruz even got elected in the first place.

The fact that Texas is even competitive is INSANE!

Barack Obama set to hit the midterm campaign trail

Looks like he’s going to be the community organizer for the entire country. We need one right about now.

"Beto O'rourke: He's showing the #@%* up!"

...how... how is this an attack ad? Because Beto swore a few times? Texas GOP seems desperate, y'all.

It's almost as if Cruz wants to lose... or he thinks Texas voters are dumber than a box of rocks.

O'Rourke doesn't need to go negative but if he did, Cruz would be toast...
"Ted Cruz won't stand up for himself against President Trump, won't stand up for his wife, won't stand up for his father, so how can you trust him to stand up for you?!"

Maybe so. It's just such a strange strategy. Like, I get that the ad is attacking his use of foul language, and there's a ton of voters who may respond in favor of Cruz for that, but the end of the video... Beto... showing the fuck up. Like... it's exactly what Cruz ISN'T doing (he refused to debate Beto, but then came back with saying he'd only debate on Friday nights... then attacked Beto for refusing to such an absurd 'deal'.)

O'Rourke doesn't need to go negative but if he did, Cruz would be toast...

O'Rourke's got nothing to lose if he were to push that negativity just a little bit. But I saw one of his townhall-type videos where he even said he hadn't actually mentioned his opponent's name during his tour or whatever, so it's clear he's taking a bit of a high road. Good for him for sticking to that, for now.

I've even seen some Beto lawn signs around my area.

My favorite part of that video is Cruz's slogan.

"Oh my heavens! Beto uses nasty words! Oh dear goodness, I do declare! Lordy lordy!

Paid for by Ted Cruz: Tough as Texas."

Court won't force North Carolina redistricting this year

A panel of federal judges has dropped plans to force a redrawing of North Carolina's congressional districts in advance of this fall's midterm elections.

The decision Tuesday came after groups challenging the state's district map said they opposed making such a change so close to the Nov. 6 contest.
Disappointing, though not unexpected. I don't know how much of a swing new districts could have produced in NC. Hopefully the Dems can still flip a seat or two there.

Good news for Joe Donnelly!

In a head-to-head race, the poll finds [Joe] Donnelly with the support of 49 percent of likely voters, compared with 43 percent who back Braun. Among all registered voters, it’s a similar margin — 48 percent for Donnelly and 42 percent for Braun. (The margin of error for likely voters in the poll is +/- 5 percentage points.)

In a three-way contest that includes Libertarian Lucy Brenton, it’s 44 percent for Donnelly, 41 percent for Braun and 8 percent for Brenton among likely voters.
