Re: 2018 Congressional, Governor, etc election thread

That's an excellent question that Ben Jacobs asks.

The guy in this video says that one possible reason is that any illegal aliens in attendance would - justifiably - worry about being filmed by the media. However, he then goes on to say that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could ask the media to keep the camera focused on her and not the audience, and that they would likely comply.

He then goes on to say that he thinks her real reason for banning the media from a town hall is that there might be a constituent in attendance who asks her a tough question about economics that she can't answer. Specifically, he says that she doesn't seem to understand that the only reason the democratic socialism of countries like Norway works is because there is a strong, healthy private sector to pay the taxes to fund it. Take away that strong, healthy private sector, and your country ends up like Venezuela.

I agree with him on both of these points.

Judging from the stuff that our resident garbage collector is bringing back, there is certainly an attempt to demonize Ocasio-Cortez, just like they did Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, as if they are the reason we continue to need Donald Trump. I don't think it's going to work, but when that's all you have...

Tell me where/when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has advocated eliminating America's strong, healthy private sector. I'll wait...

No.

I have never tried to "demonize" anyone.

This is a political forum. And more specifically, this is a thread in that political forum about people who are running for the U.S. Congress in the 2018 election.

If you wish to defend Ocasio-Cortez from my criticisms, then please do so. But please do not make this a personal attack on me, and please do not accuse me of "demonizing" anyone.

I didn't say that she advocated eliminating American's strong, healthy private sector.

What I did say is that I don't think she understands that without a strong, healthy private sector to pay taxes, socialism cannot work.

In this earlier post in this thread, I actually said that since she is a member of the Democratic Socialists of American, I would like to know if she agrees or disagrees with these two specific parts of their platform. This is what I wrote:

"we reject an economic order based on private profit"

and

"we share a vision of a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production"

If she ever specifically says she opposes both of those things, that would be great.

As long as she remains silent, I can only think that it's highly likely (although not certain, as I have no proof) that she agrees with both of those things.

Those two things are completely different than the democratic socialism of Sweden. Those two things are much more in line with the current situation in Venezuela.

Bernie Sanders said that Hugo Chavez was a "communist dictator."

I'm curious to know if Ocasio-Cortez agrees or disagrees with Sanders.

I'm hoping that she will have town hall meetings in the future where she does allow the media, and that at one of those meetings, one of her constituents will ask her if she agrees or disagrees with those two parts of the platform, as well as whether she agrees or disagrees with Bernie Sanders.

Re: 2018 Congressional, Governor, etc election thread

Here are two threads from Democratic Underground, both with a large number of responses. They overwhelmingly think it's a bad idea for her to ban the media:

https://upload.democraticunderground.com/10142136073

https://upload.democraticunderground.com/10142135873

And here's a thread where the Washington Post fact checks a bunch of her statements and gives her "false" on five of them. A lot of people in this thread think she is way above her head:

If the Democrats want to make a dent in gerrymandering, they're going to have to win a bunch of gubernatorial elections.

Without gerrymandering (or with proportional representation), the Republican House majority would almost certainly be doomed this fall. That's weird. Usually, Democrats are in favor of enforcing the Americans with Disabilities Act by shutting places down. The incident in your post is the only time I have ever seen Democrats take the opposite position.

Even if Heyer was deliberately protesting in the street and blocking traffic, I still think Fields should be charged with murder for murdering her.

Just because I think that protesting in the street and deliberately blocking traffic is dangerous and a bad idea, does not mean that I support Nazis.

If you or anyone else here is going to accuse me of defending Nazis, please at least have the decency to quote my exact words.
