The Qatar Crisis: Or How Donald Trump Just Screwed the US Military in the Middle East

Over the weekend, Saudi Arabia and a bunch of its allies announced a blockade against Qatar. Their reasoning is that the Qatari government backs the Muslim Brotherhood and religious extremism, which is true -- but it's also true for Saudi Arabia and most of its allies. The real reason for the move is more likely that Qatar is rich and doesn't let the Saudis call the shots, and they also run al Jazeera, which is a thorn in the side of most Middle Eastern governments.

And of course this comes just weeks after Trump visited the Middle East. In his speech, which the White House hailed as a great unifying moment for the US and its Muslim allies, he urged the Muslim world to crack down on extremism, which the Saudis seized upon as an excuse to go after Qatar.

And how has el Jefe reacted to this news?

Oh, and by the way, US Central Command's forward headquarters, containing tens of thousands of troops and hundreds of planes, many of them currently carrying out attack sorties against ISIS, is in Qatar. So the President of the United States publicly sold out the country that houses one of our most important bases, potentially endangering the troops stationed there and putting at risk millions of dollars in equipment and infrastructure.

And the reason Qatar let us build a base there is to give them protection against the Saudis, so we've also damaged our standing with every country that relies on us for protection.

WINNING!

"The beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!"

That comes right after his plan to bomb the shit out of ISIS and destroy them within the first week of his presidency.

If anybody did anything this incompetent in the real world, they'd be tossed out the door on their ass. We get stuck with four years of shit like this. Will we survive as a nation? Probably. What I really am starting to think about now is what the next administration (assuming Trump doesn't win a 2nd term) will have to do to restore and rebuild these delicate relationships with the rest of the world.

He literally doesn't know what he's doing or what he's saying, and he doesn't listen to anyone who actually would understand these things.

Chuck Todd:

You wrote this in 2011 about Saudi Arabia. "It's the world's biggest funder of terrorism. Saudi Arabia funnels our petro dollars, our very own money, to fund the terrorists that seek to destroy our people while the Saudis rely on us to protect them." What are U.S.-Saudi relations going to look like under a Trump administration?

DONALD TRUMP:

Well, one thing they'll look like -- first of all, I get along very well. They pay me millions of dollars for apartments, okay? I like that. You know, and so does China. And so does Mexico. And so does a lot of other people, all right? I make a tremendous amount of money from selling very wealthy people from other parts of the world and from the United States apartments and other things.
They lease tremendous office space from me. So does China. The biggest bank is in my building, one of my buildings. So it's not that I don't get along with all of -- I get along with them. But their leaders are much smarter than our leaders, Chuck and, like, from a different planet.
Still, his supporters and congress don't care - they "won". So much winning, right?

Oh, and if there was any question as to why Trump is being so conciliatory to Saudi Arabia...

Trump's Washington DC hotel received $270,000 from Saudi Arabia

How does he KEEP getting a free pass for this shit?

Maybe because many Republican voters don't hold their party accountable? Democrats/liberals/progressives can complain, but as long as Republicans control congress, they're going to protect Trump.

It's crazy to me that his connections to Russia, and his public praising of Putin have not angered his supporters.

It's like he's going out of his way to weaken our relationship with allies, which in turn, only strengthens Russia.

Are you talking directly to Democrats when you ask that question? Because I haven't heard much about this from them. Meaning, your Democrat leaders.

In fact, I haven't heard much from establishment Republicans, either.

Why? Because they all love Saudi Arabia.

This deal would not have happened if Democrat and Republican establishment types would have been more resistant. But they LOVED THIS DEAL. Saudi Arabia is their cash cow. Always has been. Just look at prior relations with Hillary, Obama, both Bushies, and Bill Clinton.

And Trump handed this deal to them on a platter.

And for the record, I've been highly critical of Trump's Saudi deal. It's only a matter of time before this massive arms deal will blow up in his face.

Sorry for the pun.

He doesn't know shit about Saudi Arabia, but he's gonna find out.

The Saudis want a Sunni leader in Syria. Iran wants a Shi'ite leader in Syria. Both results would be terrible. Believe it or not, Assad is still the best choice. But the generals and politicians (Pence as well) that surround Trump, who are establishment, pitched him the idea that Saudis are our friends, "always have been", and to get on board.

Kinda makes you wish his supporters hadn't put someone so incompetent about world affairs and so easily swayed by the people around him into the most powerful position in the world.

I think we'll be fine. At this point I'm pretty sure the rest of the world knows what an uneducated buffoon he is and like the majority of his own citizens, just riding this out until it's over. Assuming the next guy isn't a total fucktard like Trump, I'd imagine most countries that we've always had solid relations with would be open to mending bridges.

Re: The Qatar Crisis: Or How Donald Trump Just Screwed the US Military in the Middle

So even hearing about this on NPR I didn't realize that this was escalated by a hacked news report in Qatar. Didn't quite realize it from the discussion here either. But it was in the original article that started this discussion thread.

From the linked article:

There are a number of theories for why things have drifted toward such an extreme. Two separate possible hacking incidents have framed the escalating feud. First, a statement was posted on an official Qatari site that attributed comments to the emir that were sympathetic to Iran and Shiite militant group Hezbollah. Even after the Qataris rejected the report and said it was the creation of hackers, Saudi and Emirati outlets continued to spread it as fact. Meanwhile, the leaked emails of the Emirati envoy in Washington seem to show his country's long-running desire to counter Qatari influence.
CNN says it was Russian hackers:

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/06/po...sis/index.html

US investigators believe Russian hackers breached Qatar's state news agency and planted a fake news report that contributed to a crisis among the US' closest Gulf allies, according to US officials briefed on the investigation.

The FBI recently sent a team of investigators to Doha to help the Qatari government investigate the alleged hacking incident, Qatari and US government officials say.
Intelligence gathered by the US security agencies indicates that Russian hackers were behind the intrusion first reported by the Qatari government two weeks ago, US officials say. Qatar hosts one of the largest US military bases in the region.

FBI to Qatar: "Blame it on the Russians."
Qatar: "But, we believe that Saudi Ar---"
FBI: "BLAME. IT. ON. THE. RUSSIANS."

How convenient. Place blame on Russia once again, overlooking the obvious hatred the Sunni's and Shi'ites have for each other.

What is Russia NOT being blamed for these days. First they help Trump, then they aren't, then they were...now they are not.

It suddenly feels like July 1914.

Qatar backs Iran. Saudi Arabia backs ISIS. The Saudis insult Qatar and accuse them of aligning with terrorists. ISIS officially announced they were behind the attacks in Iran to give Iran a warning and Qatar as well.

Now we'll probably see attacks in Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the near future.

Oh wait. Russia! It was Russians who dressed up as the attackers. I bet we have Fake Dead People.

Hey, I have an idea. Maybe CNN can blame Russia for Trump's ineptness. Then we can all go home satisfied.

P.S. This ploy by the Saudis could also be a way to get US presence out of Qatar.

Well of course he doesn't know that. He's a person who doesn't study, who doesn't learn and who doesn't ever want to show that he doesn't know everything. Remember, he consults WITH HIS OWN BRAIN when he needs answers.

This is what his supporters wanted in office. They don't know we have a base there either.

Wouldn't this information be obligated on his generals to inform him?

But yes, I am concerned, and would not surprise me if Trump just blabbered out what somebody told him or what he read on a news website.

Does someone need to tell him to put his pants on too? I mean, my god - is there a point where someone who gets a job is responsible for the duties of that job?

Well, if we see Trump streaking naked across the White Hose lawn in the near future, you will have your answer.
