Police Officers Shot, 1 Killed in France Terror Attack

Interior ministry spokesman, Pierre-Henry Brandet, told France's BFMTV news channel that the officers appeared to have been deliberately targeted.
Security has been especially high since Tuesday, when police said they thwarted a terror attack by arresting two men. He was taken into custody but while being questioned grabbed another officer's gun and shot him three times, the source said.
Conservative French presidential hopeful Francois Fillon tweeted: "Paying homage to police who give their lives to protect ours". However, Simchayoff noted, the candidates will most likely respond to the attack in more detail at the end of the first round.
The claim came quickly and the naming of the assailant suggested a degree of direct contact with Islamic State.
French anti-terror prosecutors and the National Intelligence Service are opening an investigation to determine the nature of the incident, the Paris Prosecutor's Office said in a text to CNN.
"The whole of Europe is targeted because it represents the values and ideals of peace", he said.
President Francois Hollande said he was convinced the circumstances of the attack in a country pointed to a terrorist act.
Brandet told local channel BFM TV that a man came out of his auto while it was stopped at a light and started shooting at a police vehicle. "The man parked just in front of the bus and then he got out a Kalashnikov and then he shot six times", the witness said.
Brandit said it is too early to know if the gunman had an accomplice. The attacker, a 29-year-old Egyptian, was seriously injured. In July, an attacker in Nice drove a truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day, killing more than 80 people and injuring hundreds before he was fatally shot by police.
He also called for campaigning generally to be suspended, although from midnight on Friday the law says it has to stop anyway. The avenue was clear of residents and tourists but teeming with security officers Thursday night. Candidates went ahead with a debate Thursday night.

The incident recalled two recent attacks on soldiers providing security at prominent locations around Paris, one at the Louvre museum in February and one at Orly airport last month.
Security has been tight because of the vote.
The Paris shooting came two days after two men were arrested in Marseille, in southern France, who were suspected of planning an "imminent" attack.
He was also convicted in 2003 of attempted murder in the shooting of two police officers. "It's a very awful thing that's going on in the world today", Trump said, adding that he thought it was "another terrorist attack", though there has been no formal confirmation of that at this point.
Many police vehicles can be seen on the avenue that passes numerous city's most iconic landmarks.
In Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump offered his condolences after what he said "looks like another terrorist attack". What can you say?
The Champs-Elysees is a main road lined with restaurants, cafes, exclusive designer boutiques and tourist shops.
The presidential palace, the Elysee, is only a few blocks away. #ChampsElysees has been closed.
Police authorities called on the public to avoid the area. French politicians immediately spoke out on social media.
"Our thoughts are very much with the family".

I was surprised there wasn't a post already about this one.

Are these becoming so commonplace we aren't phased any more?

I know this will poke the bear, but it is a serious question. France has the type of gun laws many are seeking here in the states, yet time after time the bad guys are using AK's which are banned. How are these guys getting them into the country since I thought surrounding countries had the same bans. They must be driving them in from somewhere? Are they shipping them in in pieces by UPS?

Pretty much. Happening so often it's like a shooting in the US. All it takes is one car of weapons to get through and it's open season on citizens.

Values and ideals of peace are new to the continent responsible for two world wars and the colonization of Asia, Africa and the Americas. Escaping the past is a bitch, sometimes it comes back to haunt you.
