US launches missile strikes against Syria

Early reports of near 50 Tomahawk missiles fired at Syrian bases.

The U.S. military launched approximately 50 cruise missiles at a Syrian military airfield late on Thursday, in the first direct American assault on the government of President Bashar al-Assad since that country’s civil war began six years ago.

The operation, which the Trump administration authorized in retaliation for a chemical attack killing scores of civilians this week, dramatically expands U.S. military involvement in Syria and exposes the United States to heightened risk of direct confrontation with Russia and Iran, both backing Assad in his attempt to crush his opposition.

The missiles were launched from two Navy destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean. They targeted an airbase called Shayrat in Homs province, which is the site from which the planes that conducted the chemical attack in Idlib are believed to have originated.

In comparison, the start of the Iraq war in 2003 saw the use of roughly 500 cruise missiles and 47 were fired at the opening of the anti-Islamic State campaign in Syria in 2014.

The attack may put hundreds of American troops now stationed in Syria in greater danger. They are advising local forces in advance of a major assault on the Syrian city of Raqqa, the Islamic State’s de facto capital.

I don't agree with much that Trump does, but I like this action.

Supposedly it was 59 missiles and Russia approved.

Mixed news. Diplomacy hasn't worked a whit with Assad, but I'm not sure Strumpf's typically ham-fisted, "bull in a china shop" approach is the right one. It's kind of like a shot in the dark. It could work in ousting Assad and setting Putin back on his heels, it might be a lot of sound and fury amounting to nothing, or it might be a catastrophic provocation of Putin.

I guess Trump's honeymoon with Putin is over.

Maybe Bannon is to blame for the early Russia love.

As I posted in the Trump thread, this is nothing out of the ordinary...

But it does go against Trump saying that he'd stay out of other countries affairs.

BTW, how come no one ever asks how much it costs to bomb a country and if we have the budget for it, but when someone suggests feeding our own hungry citizens, we suddenly have to have a big to do about how much it'll cost and what other programs to scrap?

Re: US launches missile strikes against Syria

I have no problem with this in theory, but I'm highly skeptical of 45's ability to put this into application in a way that doesn't get us all killed. In particular, we should've consulted our allies and at least made a show of going through the UN (if Russia blocked us, we could've painted them as the baddies who are stymieing the international order). Then there's the question, given how quickly this was launched, of whether we have an endgame in mind.

I believe this is called logic. This is a Trump presidency, so that is a notion they aren't interested in - nor can they comprehend.

There's a difference between dropping bombs on terrorists, as we've been doing for years, and dropping them on the military of a sovereign country, which we've managed to avoid since 2003.

There's also this:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">^^^ UPDATE Reserve Marine units in *some* US cities have been activated. Officers to report in.</p>&mdash; JΞSŦΞR ✪ ΔCŦUAL³³º¹ (@th3j35t3r) <a href="https://twitter.com/th3j35t3r/status/850156182312554496">April 7, 2017</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-conversation="none" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/th3j35t3r">@th3j35t3r</a> Confirm that for 29 palms</p>&mdash; Kim (@kdDesertRed) <a href="https://twitter.com/kdDesertRed/status/850172524000190464">April 7, 2017</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Doesn't sound like 45's going to be satisfied with blowing things up at a distance.

Not necessarily. Putin loves the military play. This can work out for him because it slaps around Assad and Putin doesn't even have to do it. Then Russia can swoop in as the honest broker to try to smooth things over. Russia can look like the good guy here. As long as Assad stays in power, Russia will be cool.

I'm still skeptical about this having any effect. Say maybe this was just an old air base with no one there, Putin lets Trump take it out just to look busy.

He already looks better than Obama who didn't do anything last time Syria gassed their people after making the red line statement. Of course there is no end game here, but it sure feels good to shoot at Syria.
