Re: C-Span 2017 Presidential Rankings

The problem with such rankings is they focus on Presidents who got stuff done without regard to the morality of what they did, which is why guys like Polk, Wilson and Jackson can rank in the top half despite being wicked men who caused great suffering and would be subject to prosecution by the International Court of Justice if they ruled today.

How else could a wicked bastard like Ronald Reagan make the top 10.

Ruthlessness can be part of the job. Jimmy Carter was an unusually decent man, but a bad president.

One wonders where Bannon will rank in the final analysis.

Don't forget #3 FDR who put Japanese American citizens in internment camps and took away their homes and property. FDR's meddling also caused a depression which only lasted 2 years in Europe to go on for 12 years in America. But like you said he did a lot of meddling so that makes him good to these historians. Sick to put a guy who put innocent American citizens in internment camps as one of your top 3 Presidents.

He defeated Communism without firing a single bullet. He gave us enormous economic growth (over 7% GDP growth) and turned around the economic/foreign policy disasters that Carter left us with. Pretty easy to understand why men like Lincoln, Washington, Reagan are at the top of the list.

Then there are all the slave-owners whose actions caused immense human suffering, including those who used their "property" as sex slaves. Some of them are in the Top Ten.

And they get cherished memorials & monuments built to them and appear on mountainsides as national treasures.

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37

Re: C-Span 2017 Presidential Rankings

Welcome to the forum, cool8man.

No, the Great Depression did not last 2 years in Europe. Where on Earth did you get that idea?

And Reagan certainly contributed to the fall of communism, but the idea that he did it singlehandedly -- let alone without firing a shot (how many proxy wars did we fight with the Soviets?) -- is laughable. I mean, all we ever hear from communism's ideological opponents is that it is an unsustainable system doomed to failure, yet somehow if not for Reagan, the Societ Union would still be strong? Come on.

Anyway, see you in 2028.

Saturday was a nice day here in DC, so I decided to go for a bike ride. I wound up at the MLK Memorial. The memorial sits on the Tidal Basin, and the centerpiece of the Memorial is a 30 foot granite statue of Dr. King. The statue looks out across the Tidal Basin, facing directly toward the Jefferson Memorial. It was not lost on me that Dr. King stands watch over the author of the Declaration of Independence, keeping an eye on the author of the "promissory note" he invoked in his famous speech at the March on Washington (the Lincoln Memorial itself lies a few hundred yards in the opposite direction, and it also was not lost on me that in less than half a century, Dr. King went from trying to awaken America's conscience at that Memorial to having a Memorial of his own).

All men (and all women) are flawed, and all our endeavors are likewise flawed. We can admire men despite those flaws, but we should not ever lose sight of those flaws either.

People most responsible for the end of Communism:

1) Lech Walesa
2) Mikhail Gorbachev
3) Pope John Paul II
4) Zbigniew Brzezinski
5) Jimmy Carter

Carter was a mediocre President domestically, but his and Brzezinski's decision to turn Afghanistan into the Soviet's Vietnam did more to end the Cold War than all of Reagan's policies combined.

Oh my mistake, Reagan was great. Here are some highlights (and there are many more) :

After talking a lot of shit did nothing about terrorist truck bomb killed 241 U.S. Marines
Supported apartheid
Iran Contra
Armed both Iran & Iraq
Supported right wing death squads in Central & South America
Most corrupt administration in U.S. History
Welfare Queen
Tripled the national debt in 8 years
Took hundreds of billions of dollars from the Social Security fund
Ignored AIDS until his 6th year in office
