Fort Lauderdale airport shooting

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.994581bf84ca

"Police said five people were killed in a shooting Friday afternoon at the Fort Lauderdale international airport that also sent eight others to the hospital.

The suspected shooter is in custody, according to a spokeswoman for the Broward County Sheriff’s Department, which was on scene at the airport.

Authorities said they first received a call about shots fired just before 1 p.m. The sheriff’s office also said that eight people had been injured and taken to an area hospital, but a spokeswoman said she did not know if all of these people were wounded by gunfire.

All flights were temporarily suspended in the wake of the shooting, airport officials said. The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport posted on Twitter about “an ongoing incident” at the baggage claims in one of the terminals, but did not provide further information."

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting

Apparently there's another "incident" happening now, per TSA:

Nevermind, but there is something going on in the parking garage now apparently.

U.S. officials say the gunman was a passenger on a Canadian flight and was carrying a checked gun

Dumb question: Who the fuck gets to carry a checked gun on a flight?

Pretty much anybody I think. The gun isn't with you.

Yeah, it's kind of interesting how we seem to only want to protect people from being shot with a firearm while we're on an airplane. Anywhere else, we're fair game I guess.

Hunter's check unloaded guns all the time. Not sure about checking bullets separately.

What? He got it out of his checked bag after the flight landed. No different than walking into baggage claim from the street.

You must not be able to see slop101's tweet. He went to baggage claim, got his bag, removed gun, loaded gun in bathroom, came out and shot people.

Question: Was it an international flight? Had he already cleared customs? Usually you claim your bags but then still have to clear customs.

Sounds like it was legally checked.

No. Baggage claim is before/outside-of the scanners. He went out (as though he was leaving), claimed his luggage, and instead of walking out to leave, shot people.

The gun would have been rightfully checked in when getting a ticket voucher, prior to the TSA checkpoint.

You can legally check a gun and ammunition before boarding a plane. Baggage Claim is after you exit all the security areas and exits to the parking garage / taxi / bus pick-up area.

They have restrooms in that area, and that's where he loaded the gun.

The shooter was apparently Army National Guard, he was honorably discharged 4 months ago.

I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. Why blow up a plane when you can get more people by blowing up the security line?

Any other part of the airport and it may as well be a McDonalds or Luby's.

Well, the idea was to not be able to hijack a plane - if some whackadoo just wants to kill a ton of people, there are countless ways to do so.

Besides, as anyone who's 'experienced' air travel recently will attest, at that point people would be - no pun intended - lining up to be targets.

Except when I'm waiting one minute for someone to get to my car. And I get harassed by a security guard (TSA?) until I have to take another lap around the whole fucking airport.

That's true, but there's usually short term parking less than 500 feet away.

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting

I mean it's morbid at hell, start shooting at a busy mall the weekend before Christmas right near the line to meet Santa. Worldwide attention.

The fact is that we can't make every public place 100% safe. But I still think we could make it tougher to get weapons that make it so easy to kill so many.
