Right, he can afford the $1,333 per month that he currently pays for rent - but can he come up with enough money for the down payment?
Did he expect to buy a house with no/very little money down and just pay the whole thing off with monthly payments? Because if he does, then almost every renter out there will become home owners.

Lastly, as RedHood points out, what is wrong with renters owning homes? Or is the American Dream only intended for some, not all?

There used to be programs, like the Nehemiah Project, that were down payment assistance programs that allowed hundreds of thousands of buyers to get into homes with little to no down payment. They also often did not have geographic limitations like many/most of the current programs. The downside was that the buyers had to basically pay the full asking price for the home so this sort of program was a much more popular option in "buyers' markets", of course. However, it is how my ex-wife and I bought our first home with no down payment at all and the charity that financed the program got a 1% skim for charity for their efforts, which is why they financed it.
Alas, this program and many other DPAs just like it were effectively outlawed under the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008.

I have no issue with renters owning homes - a nice chunk of home owners started off as renters... however, if there's a big uptick in demand for homes to purchase, that just increases the price of homes... which will wind up making the monthly mortgage payments harder for a lot of people.

So I guess get rid of down-payments for everything then - which I don't have a problem with.

I still fail to see the problems you are stating about renters being able to afford homes
