My guess is that Elizabeth Warren will be the next Democratic nominee.

Re: New! Improved! The 2020 Presidential Election Thread: It's Never Over! Edition

I actually think its a bit more interesting to see what effect this has on the Republicans. I think a number of Republicans were hoping to ramp up for 2020. Guys who fell short this year like Cruz or Kasich or Rubio probably wanted to take another shot at it. And some new blood probably would have too, like maybe Paul Ryan? If Clinton had won, it would mark 12 straight years of Democrats in the Oval Office and that combined with Hillary's general unpopularity would have marked a great opportunity for any Republican to win it.

Now? It's far less certain. Maybe Trump bombs so bad that someone mounts a primary challenge to a sitting President (certainly not unheard of, but often quite difficult). Or maybe Trump simply does not run. He's already 70 and there's long been rumblings of how much he really wants the job. But assuming he does run, you can imagine a scenario that locks out good Republican candidates for a while.

A Trump 2020 run would seem especially vulnerable to attack. He's already an extremely divisive candidate that failed to win the popular vote. For all the baggage that Clinton brought to the table, the Dems could simply field a more traditional candidate and swing those narrow margins they lost by in 2016. The biggest defense Trump would have would be a successful Presidency. I'm just not sure people are super optimistic that will happen (you could list a number of reasons).

If a Democratic wins in 2020, then whoever runs for Republicans in 2024 will face an incumbent. It's not impossible to beat an incumbent. Reagan did it. Clinton did it. And in our hypothetical here someone beats Trump. But it generally takes some extenuating circumstances to make it happen. We don't yet know what those circumstances could be. Too many hypotheticals need to play out. But in a vacuum, the incumbent should be favored. Reagan and Clinton easily cruised to re-election. Obama did it fairly comfortably. And even George W. Bush did it despite being reasonably unpopular at the time.

Which could mean, if all this plays out, that the next best shot for Republicans not named Trump is 2028. That's a long way off if you want to be President. OF course things can easily go in a different direction.

As for Dems in 2020? I know Warren is a popular choice, though she strikes me as a bit too liberal for a wider audience. That was always my question with Bernie. Did he really have national support? Socialism still tends to be a dirty word in the US. I tend to think it'll probably be someone who isn't the big name. And probably not a senator either (that's where most of the possible candidates seem to come from). I don't really have a good suggestion, maybe Bill de Blasio?

Surprised to learn that Frankie, who is only 27, had a mini-stroke back in September.

New Yorkers hate de Blasio, except maybe those in the rabid Bernie Sanders wing of the local Democratic Party. So far his attempts to develop a national profile have fallen flat.

Considering Trump won, we can expect a degredation in the quality of candidates and a push for celebrities to run. The whole thing turns into a hybrid reality show/freak show.

2024 will be Kanye West vs. one of the Duck Dynasty fuckwits.

Considering that the job requirements are now "reality show host" and "failed steak magnate", I'd get behind Hanks. At least he's a decent human being by all accounts.

If Warren can keep a cool head (I've seen her accuse Trump of some outrageous things which would hurt her just like Hillary--and let's not go down that road again, shall we?) and if the DNC elites are smart and don't deepthroat Democrats a flawed and just terrible candidate like they did this last election, then YES, and we'll see a much better and formidable political creation.

Like I said earlier, a Warren / Booker combo would be a great place to start.

Some recommendations:

a) Don't use the Racist Card. It's old and Blacks said with this last election, they don't like being used and that the economy was more of a priority. Jobs...were a priority. Not their color.

b) Don't use the Sexism Card. Many women voted for Trump, and were offended Democrats were continually driving home this accusation. It made many women feel attacked if they supported Trump's policies.

c) Don't use the All Immigrants Are Bad To Republicans Card. We know damn well illegals are a problem and this also cost Democrats the election. Latinos voted for Trump in areas in Florida which were supposedly going to Clinton. They did not. This is a message that obeying the laws are a good idea to campaign on. And historically, Hillary was very pro-LEGAL Immigration. She only changed her tune in the last few terms to appease Obama supporters...and Obama himself.

So, let's get a clear head, clean it, swab it, and form a new party that Republicans will be forced to contend with, rather than simply counter with political ammunition that makes voters scratch their heads when they get to the polls.

d) Campaign on policy issues! Why isn't this being focused on? I still don't see you guys making this a priority. Instead, I see Trump being investigated for things yet to be proven with his businesses. Take that off your desks. Concentrate on his policies, and how they work out.

Winning takes time.

Don't let Hillary's campaign rub off on you guys. It's a failed method. It's a flawed method. Use true and proven tactics, which are evidence-based and cannot be refuted by Republicans.

??? Republicans are masters at denying basic facts.

It sounds to me like you want a Democratic Party that doesn't call out Republicans on their weakest points. That's like me saying I want a GOP that supports gay marriage, abortion, and a federal living wage.

I've come to the conclusion that it has very little to do with policies, at least for the Dems. They have to like their candidate and be inspired emotionally. If the Dems can find someone who does that, they have a very good chance of winning the White House because they have more registered voters.

Lots of people entered politics directly from showbiz. Al Franken comes to mind.

2020 prediction. Trump doesn't want to run for another four years. The system is rigged. Kanye West (R) (fixing the system by being part of it!) Vs Phil Robertson (Duck Dynasty Guy) (runs as a Southern Democrat!). It'll end in split vote. 120M people vote. Fifty lone dudes on Youtube rant about leaving their party. Everyone else just votes the same party they've always voted (and their granddaddy and their granddaddy's granddaddy). Gary Johnson still gets 3%.

You're kidding, right?
Don't pretend like this is a Democrat issue.
The only reason Bush Jr. won was because the Republican voters felt he was "like them" and wanted to have a beer with him.

Not this election cycle. Trump was in no way "like them." There are theories that Obama was the exception, not the rule. That he galvanized voters who otherwise wouldn't show up. It's rare for the Republican base to stay home. They are always motivated. They always talk about the weather needing to be good on election day for the Dems to show up. They are not as reliable as Republican voters. Look at the State Governors and legislature. Republicans always want low overall turnout because their voters always show up.

I disagree with that, at least as far as "their" perception of him; he talks like them, he has the same opinions as them, and if they were rich (which they feel is any day now), they would live their life like he does. They truly do see him as one of them, just an idealized rich version.

I just want to chime in to say we need to change this thread to The Steven Bannon Edition.

I mean sheesh, this probably caused many a wet dream for a significant percentage of Trump voters, they have a freaking representative of Brietbart News in the White House, the end times indeed. I suspect getting the White House to take the news that sites like Brietbart report seriously was on a GOP bucket list or two...well, Mission Accomplished.

Republicans sat on their butts in 2012, however.

True story about the weather situation, though. Maybe that's why voting is so much better in California and Florida. If California was like Oregon...Democrats would be fucked for life.
