Neil deGrasse Tyson angers Christians with Christmas Tweet

Is he a troll or just joking lol?

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson sparked an Internet supernova on Christmas Day when he took to Twitter to troll Christians.

“On this day long ago, a child was born who, by age 30, would transform the world,” the “Cosmos” host tweeted Thursday. “Happy Birthday Isaac Newton b. Dec 25, 1642.”

Tyson long despised among religious conservatives further incensed the faithful celebrating the birth of Jesus by tweeting: “Merry Christmas to all. A Pagan holiday (BC) becomes a Religious holiday (AD). Which then becomes a Shopping holiday (USA).”

In another tweet

QUESTION: ThIs year, what do all the world's Muslims and Jews call December 25th? ANSWER: Thursday
7:30 AM - 25 Dec 2014

Wasnt the JC not born on Christmas? I thought somebody proved that? I think a lot of the "dates" people go w/ Jesus and his bs were proved to be off.

I think they have said, for various reasons, that he would actually be born in the fall..

Personally I think the should just decide to make it June 1st so that it's nowhere near Christmas time and stores won't be so crowded. I'm a genius.

Most scholars don't believe Jesus was actually born in December. There are legitimate arguments ranging from March to September, since Scripture doesn't point to a specific date. One early Pope believed it was November 18th.

Christians did co-opt festivals surrounding the Winter Solstice for celebrating Christmas.

I have a tremendously high tolerance for religious satire and have done plenty of my own, and I absolutely believe God has a sense of humor (if not, I'm in big trouble). And I really dig Neil deGrasse Tyson's lifting up science in new ways in the national conversation. And I hate the New York Post.

And... yeah, it kinda feels a little like trolling.

That said, the "jokes" are really played out. NdGT needs some new material.

Some people spend all their time looking for things to be offended about.

There's nothing wrong with what Tyson said or how he said it. Sir Issac Newton is a figure of monumental importance and it's a shame that a scientist making note of the fact he shares a birthday with another who had a bit of an impact himself is slammed by the rectangular rectum crowd.

He is just poking the big dumb gelatinous blob of ignorance...also known as the typical Glenn Beck anti-intellectual listener.

Re: Neil deGrasse Tyson angers Christians with Christmas Tweet

I'm a practicing Catholic, and I don't find the offensive at all. Even vaguely. In any universe. Seriously, it's a joke people. If it's even that. Lighten up. Hell, I have Christian friends who constantly complain about it becoming a shopping holiday. As someone who works retail, I'm not a fan of Christmas. And whether you're a believer or an atheist, Newton was born on Christmas and became a revolutionary and important man. How is that offensive? It's a statement of fact. It's like saying "the sky is blue" or "water is wet." If this is what you're offended by and stressing out about, then you really need a hobby.

I guess you could argue that the jokes themselves are a little tired, but if that's the case, there's even less reason than ever to be offended, because it's something you've heard before.

Are there seriously people who believe thinking about this is a worthwhile use of their time?

I think most of the brouhaha is coming from people who want more brouhaha from the religious people. How can you have more whining and sniveling if you haven't had enough whining and sniveling? Someone needs to be offended and it does not matter who. It's just whinging for it's own sake.Zoot Allures!

Neil loves to get his little jabs in. I watched his Cosmos series, which was rather good, but there are statements in the program that seemed a little awkward.

Can't have one without the other, bro.

Newton invented gravity, of course his birth should be celebrated.

I like Neil Degrasse Tyson a lot but atheists can be just as douchey as all those religious nuts.

Except that the presence of the former is not felt on an everyday basis (at least by me) as much as the latter.

I think this needs to be moved into the Religion/Politics sub-forum.

I posted "Merry Santamas To All" on my facebook page on Christmas morning and felt the wrath of some relatives. Christians need to come down off their cross and have a sense of humor.

But why did you post that in the first place. I think you posted Santamas, just to get a reaction. Then when you got the reaction, you then called them out for doing what you wanted them to do.

It doesn't make much sense to take a person to task when you wanted the desired action to happen in the first place.

The first joke could also be seen as a jab at Jews and Muslims, who, I notice, have not taken offense.
