Looks like we need to quit saying "goodbye."

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/goodbye#Etymology

Etymology

From earlier Godby, Godby'e, Godbwye, God b'w'y, God bwy yee, God buy you, God be wi' you: each a progressively shorter contraction of God be with you, with change of God to good by confusion with good morning, good day, etc.
Crap, another reason to be offended. I wonder if hard core atheists will now treat this like "bless you" when someone sneezes.

Let's just be thankful we don't have the word in the pledge of allegiance or on our money. Imagine the horror.

Luckily, I'm already covered. I'm that annoying dad who says "Hasta La Vista, Baby" in a bad Austrian accent and cracks up at himself every time.

Re: Looks like we need to quit saying "goodbye."

I thought that was pretty common knowledge. What had you looking it up in the first place?

Also, I thought this thread would be about whether people announce they're leaving threads or the forum and then coming back and whether that is frowned upon / allowed. Then I noticed this isn't the feedback forum.

Re: Looks like we need to quit saying "goodbye."

I'm sure many of our English words have etymological roots in Christianity. Who gives a shit?

Surely, it's a wholly separate issue from having In God We Trust on currency.

Re: Looks like we need to quit saying "goodbye."

Crap, now every time I want to say goodbye I'll have to say:

"Wrong, sir! Wrong! Under section 37-B of the contract signed by him, it states quite clearly that all offers shall become null and void if, and you can read it for yourself in this photostatic copy, ‘I, the undersigned, shall forfeit all rights, privileges, and licenses herein and herein contained’, et cetera, et cetera, ‘Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum’, et cetera, et cetera, ‘Memo bis punitor delicatum!” It’s all there! Black and white! Clear as crystal! You stole Fizzy Lifting drinks! You bumped into the ceiling which now has to be washed and sterilized. So you get nothing! You lose! Good day, sir! … Sir, I said, ‘Good day!'"

Don't worry, "Goodbye" won't last much longer, anyway:

I'm going to go out on a limb here and insinuate that this isn't the most constructive of comments.

It's revenge for all the times my dad would say things like "23 Skiddoo!" to me.

I believe it's a quote from Venica, California Gold's Gym manager Howard Kleiner

Shall we start with Genesis?

21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

Often 'figurative language' is used in The Bible.

Not according to some Biblical scholars here on DVD Talk.

You're jealous because God gave rib girl to Adam instead of you? Keep reading, you might be thankful.

I think I got the best of that deal. The serpent still crawls on its belly, and women still give birth through pain, but I work at a keyboard in an air conditioned office.

Don't forget the Jews. We need just one kind of person left on this planet. Good people like you and me.
