Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)

just coming in...

very sad, but he was ill for quite some time.

he was a true revolutionary and inspiration.

i remember reading about him and studying a little bit. what he did and survived is truly amazing.

Not surprising, but still sad. One of the great leaders of the 20th century.

re: Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)

How old was he when he was released from prison? 72? How many people back then would have expected him to live until the age of 95?

R.I.P.

And, in before one of the brain trust says something stupid and racist, and then denies it is stupid and racist.

In before someone claims moral superiority on the issue of Nelson Mandela's death by preemptively calling a mythological group "racists" even though they aren't present in this discussion.

Sad, but he did live to a good age. My question is how he ever married someone of Winnie's low character.

Yes, I think this and the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (mandated to uncover the truth about past abuses rather than to punish them) show the real measure of the man.

He set the tone and can be pointed to as the exemplar whenever power and money-hungry "successors" excessively deviate from his vision. Sadly, I don't think that there are many politicians - either in Africa or worldwide - that have it in themselves to exhibit his grace.
