Former VA gubernatorial candidate and state senator stabbed and son shot and killed

Interesting story out of Virginia, although details are scant so far:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...67c_story.html

Virginia state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds (D-Bath) was stabbed multiple times early Tuesday in an assault at his house in Bath County, west of Charlottesville, Virginia State Police said. The senator’s 24-year-old son, Gus Deeds, was found fatally shot inside the home.

In a brief news conference Tuesday afternoon, Corinne Geller, a state police spokeswoman, said Bath County sheriff’s deputies and state police arrived at the senator’s home on Vineyard Drive in the Millboro community at 7:25 a.m. after someone called 911 to report the assault.

Police found Gus Deeds suffering from a gunshot wound and the senator stabbed several times in the head and upper torso, Geller said. Despite the serious injuries, the elder Deeds, who was flown to the University of Virginia Health System Hospital, has been able to talk with investigators, Geller said.

Gus Deeds could not be resuscitated and died at the scene, police said.

Geller declined to say who investigators think stabbed the senator, or discuss any motive. She also declined to say who called 911, and if anyone else was inside the home at the time of the assault.

Geller said authorities are not looking for anyone else who might have been involved in the assault, an indication that the altercation involved only the senator and his son.

“We’re not looking for a third person,” Geller said. “We’re five hours into the investigation. There’s still a lot more work to be done.”
Deeds was the Democratic candidate for governor in 2009 and for AG in 2005, losing both times.

This all smells like a domestic dispute of some sort, with the son having stabbed Deeds and him either shooting his son or his son shooting himself.

The son stabbed his father (the senator) then turned a gun on himself.

Re: Former VA gubernatorial candidate and state senator stabbed and son shot and kill

"MIILLBORO, Va. (WRIC)—State Senator Creigh Deeds is in fair condition after he was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with his son Tuesday morning. Deeds' son was fatally shot during the incident.

At 7:25 a.m. on Nov. 19, Virginia State Police responded to Deeds' 26 Vineyard Drive home in Bath County, where Deeds, 55, suffered stab wounds to his head and upper torso. He managed to leave the scene on foot and walked down the hill of his residence to nearby Route 42. Deeds' cousin was driving along the route and stopped to pick up the injured senator. The pair drove to the cousin's residence and placed a 911 call to the Bath County Sheriff's Office.

Sen. Deeds was transported by ambulance to a nearby relative's farm, where he was then medevacked to the University of Virginia Medical Center. He remains there in fair condition and was alert enough to speak to police Tuesday morning.

The senator's 24-year-old son, Austin "Gus" Deeds, was found suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound at the residence. Though troopers and first responders attempted to save him, Gus Deeds died at the scene.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Salem Field Office is conducting an investigation into the assault. VSP spokeswoman Corinne Geller said during a news conference that police are looking into the incident as an attempted murder-suicide. Only Deeds and his son were home during the time of the incident."

Sounds like this kid had problems. Too bad they released him so quickly.

Official: Creigh Deeds' son released after psychiatric eval Monday

The senator's son was evaluated under an emergency custody order by mental health professionals on Monday and released, Dennis Cropper, executive director of the Rockbridge County Community Services Board, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The emergency custody order allowed Austin C. "Gus" Deeds to be held as long as four hours to determine whether he should be held longer, up to 48 hours, under a temporary detention order, Cropper said. The son was evaluated at Bath Community Hospital. An emergency custody order can be released by any magistrate.

Cropper said no psychiatric bed could be located across a wide area of western Virginia and the son was released.

We as a nation really need to address these mental issues. No room in jail, no beds in the psych ward. People are really losing it and taking others out with them.
