Forbes power list: Vladimir Putin beats Barack Obama

http://www.politico.com/story/2013/1...090.html?hp=l7

Russian President Vladimir Putin has knocked President Barack Obama off of the top spot on Forbes’ 2013 World’s Most Powerful People List.

The magazine explained Putin earned the number one ranking “because he so frequently shows his strength at home and on the global stage,” citing his involvement in negotiations with Syria over chemical weapons and NSA leaker Edward Snowden’s asylum in Russia. This is the first time Putin is at the top of the list, coming in third in 2012.

Obama, who ranked at the top of the Forbes list every year — except 2010 — since it began in 2009, fell to the number two spot out of 72 “heads of state, financiers, philanthropists and entrepreneurs who truly run the world.” One person picked for every 100 million people on the Earth, the magazine said.

The magazine said recent hurdles Obama has faced such as the government shutdown as well as the two leaders wrestling over Syria strategies and the NSA leaks has led to “shifting individual power dynamics.”

“Putin has solidified his control over Russia while Obama’s lame duck period has seemingly set in earlier than usual for a two-term president,” the magazine said.
Just wondering in the grand scheme of things do people think this matters or do you really care? Does it matter that it is Putin who "beat" him? I mean it is more of a status thing than anything real but isn't that what politics mostly is anyway

Re: Forbes power list: Vladimir Putin beats Barack Obama

Obama only got kicked back to #2? That's actually impressive, considering the issues that have gone south since 2012.

I'll be called a Communist (which is perfectly fine, by the way), but I respect Putin more than Obama. At least you know where you stand with Putin.

Yes, in a Russian prison or at the bottom of a lake.

Re: Forbes power list: Vladimir Putin beats Barack Obama

I'll say what I do about any Forbes list; what a bunch of crap. If there is a worse media entity with regards to rankings and lists, I haven't heard of it. Nearly everything they put out is wrong, based on factually incorrect information, and more akin to being on some gossip site.

As for the list, (commenting since it is there), what a joke for Putin to head any list, except perhaps one for egomaniacal despots with power envy.

I immediately thought of ESPNs weekly power rankings.

That's really unfair.

Putin prefers to poison his enemies.

It doesn't really surprise me or bother me. But that Putin has had more influence in geopolitics lately seems to be obvious. I think Putin did a pretty good job of fooling Bush, but Bush generally did not take it in the shorts either.

Well it says Head of State, not Head of Democratic State. Did Putin achieve more at home and on the world stage than Obama in 2013. Possibly. But in reality, who cares.

In all fairness, CNN says Obama is the most popular and sexy man in the world.

Sorry but the US President is the default #1. Putin may have one-upped Obama this year but he's not more powerful.

The problem is that perception can lead to reality.

Our country is facing some monumental struggles at the moment with regard to our international standing, but I wouldn't put the blame for all of them on the President.

He does have a wife, after all.

I wonder if all the conservatives on Twitter are now going to put pics of Putin alongside the star of David in their profile pics? They are so conflicted and fucked up!

What I was thinking after shaking my head at the innuendo that Obama is a putz.

Bibi is 26th, I don't care much for lists but that sounds a little high.

Well, he has nukes, so there's that. Otherwise, pretty much a blowhard.

Is this something Putin can really be proud of? Is it a skill to be able to score 8 goals in a single game against former NHL players? Or is it a sign that people don't want to be murdered for not letting a despot win?

This is entering Kim Jung Il territory. Didn't he get 18 holes in one in a single round of golf once?

It does remind me of N. Korea golf.

I think Putin learned political science from Chuck Norris.
