More proof that FoxNews isn't real news: "The Walking Dead is hurting our society"

America's obsession with 'The Walking Dead' is hurting our society

Is watching “The Walking Dead” seriously hurting American society?

I would argue ‘Yes.’ Hate me all you want, or call me paranoid and misinformed, but there is one common theme that is pervasive in American pop culture today: violence. Even more specifically, zombie violence. The idea of a zombie-infested world inspires fantasies of monsters possessed by an uncontrollable rage to kill, and viewers get a thrill imagining what it would be like to participate in this new world order.

We also see this zombie obsession in many videogames. Even more disturbingly, these games create environments for young children, in which they are exposed to an imaginary world where they get to play with firearms and place themselves in dangerous situations that they find exciting. And studies have shown that these videogames can sometimes condition people, especially young children, to be apathetic towards violence. That’s why they’re labeled M for Mature.

This obsession with the undead in television and other media is quite puzzling. The concept of zombies has been around for decades, and their mythology has even been studied by scientists to prove that such an outbreak can never occur. Yet, whether it be in books or film, zombie popularity has only increased after having originally been popularized by the 1960s film, “The Night of the Living Dead.”

Now, it seems that zombies on television are part of our daily routine. The obsession also permeates into other facets of our lives, such as with so-called Zombie Runs, in which people dressed as zombies chase other “civilians” to make them run faster towards the finish line. Even scientists at the National Institutes of Health have spent time creating an apocalyptic how-to guide on dealing with a zombie outbreak.

Give me a break. As a doctor and scientist, I know one thing for sure: When you’re dead, you’re dead. Our brains should be less focused on imaginary zombie hordes and more focused on harnessing the tools that we need in order to enhance our lives, whether it be music, education, science or the classics. Entertainment should help us soothe our brains so that we can ease our minds of some of the stress from our daily lives.

With this country heading towards a socialized system of government, in which officials don’t want you to think or focus on what is important for your own personal growth, I’m sure they’re more than happy to let you obsess over something as stupid as zombies.

And in turn, you ultimately become the zombie.

Wake up and smell the coffee. Stop obsessing over eating brains, and focus on cultivating your own.
First bolded point, its puzzling why people like zombies? Well, why do people like monsters in general? Because they're scary, they're entertaining, etc. Its not puzzling at all.

Second bolded point, as a non-doctor and non-scientist I know one thing for sure: that guy was born without a sense of humor. All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.

Third bolded point, that is especially ironic that he tells us to stop obsessing over how awesome zombies are when he is obsessing over how dumb and unrealistic zombies are.

The writer of that article is disconnected and inept.

Right, and the path to cultivating our brains is to make entertainment as stupid as possible?

Well Fox News hates zombies because the more zombies there are the more Democrats there are.

I'm just joking.. calm down now.

Yeah this was kind of a stupid article but I don't think something filed under "Manny's Notes" was really intended to be treated as "news". Just the musings of some doctor who obviously couldn't think of anything else to write about.

Dr. Manny Alvarez would be best served coming up with original material.

Kudos, Dr. Manny.

You're not a zombie. That would imply you had something in your fucking head.

And your article should be labeled M for Moron.

Don't news sites now have personal blog-type articles discussing random things.

I thought Fox News did a special report on their cable tv channel discussing this. Then I would be a little surprised and add it to the many criticisms of Fox News.

This is the problem with having a persecution complex. Everything has a common thread which is causing you to suffer at the hands of a vast, unseen "force" of some sort.

Dr. Manny Alvarez serves as FOX News Channel's (FNC) Senior Managing Editor for Health News.
So no, he's not a random bozo on Fox Nation.

Dr. Manny whines about the Socialist Zombie Apocalypse but fails to realize his own party was part of bailing out corporations with hundreds of billions of dollars...using American Taxpayer money.

That's also a "socialized system".

OK, I can agree that the show is a bit violent and not for everyone, but the zombie hate is uncalled for.

BTW, Deathtroopers (zombies in Star Wars) is awesome.

I remember a CNN piece saying the HBO Girls show was "too white." Yeah, I know some of ya'll are gonna go "but that's different, man."

I just finished Tomb Raider and I found shooting people in the head very soothing. Not to mention being rewarded with a "head hunter" trophy!

He should pay closer attention to the subject matter he's writing about. Zombies in The Walking Dead don't go for the brains, so Fox News employees aren't as safe as he might think.

This is in politics now? Cuz of the Fox News name drop or brining socialism into this?

I'm not well versed on everything Zombie but isn't the eating brains bit pretty much all stemming from Return of the Living Dead? That and well all the nods that they get? Which has made a pop culture knowledge thing.

wow.
I didn't really think the article was that bad until I saw this: With this country heading towards a socialized system of government, in which officials don’t want you to think or focus on what is important for your own personal growth, I’m sure they’re more than happy to let you obsess over something as stupid as zombies.

Why not go after the increasing popularity of superhero and comic book films over the last 10 years, and how they encourage violence. Or action films.

Or if talking about people turning into zombies, why not go after TV in general and how it helps foster short attention spans with it's passive form of entertainment? The lack of educational programming?

Yeah, I think I complained about this phenomenon in another thread. One could argue that everything aired on the Fox News TV channel fits some sort of ideological agenda, but everything that gets posted on all the blogs at the Fox news website? No way. That's way too much "content."

This "article" is pure click bait. I doubt the author really cares. I think the crossover audience with the Walking Dead and FNC is actually pretty high.

A quick perusal of wikipedia shows that Fox controls the international distribution for The Walking Dead. There's your explanation for the column, right there.

I'm sorry, but how does one guy's commentary about a social issue prove that Fox doesn't deliver accurate news? They are the only major US news outlet that doesn't suck up to Obama, and a lot of people from the left just can't stand it apparently.

It's a poorly written article, but I do believe there has been a trend to consume entertainment that is post apocalyptic in a bleak hopeless future. It's hard to feel optimistic about our own future, and we like to see people in more dire situations finding a way to survive.

Please. The so-called "trend to consume entertainment that is post apocalyptic in a bleak hopeless future" doesn't even begin to compare with the the late '60s/mid '70s era.

Yeah. If anything, TV is getting better in its programming. Well some of it. The major channels still bring a lot of the generic.

Is TWD getting better or worse? I stopped watching after the first season. I'm really bad at ever catching up on a show.
