Was this a racial slur or not?

I was looking for a parking space this morning as was another guy, windows down. Someone took a long time to park, back and forth and it upset the other driver and he shouted out the window something to the effect: 'Damn, N____ you park for shit!' Yet both drivers were white. What constitutes 'fair use' with regards to this word in this case? Just Racist?

Not a racial slur, but not the choice of words I'd have used.

Re: Was this a racial slur or not?

Did he say it with a "a" at the end or with an "er" ?

But what if he yelled out some derogatory term for an Asian. Given that Asians are stereotyped as bad drivers.

Yes it was racist because it was a white person saying it. It doesn't matter who he was saying it to. He just hates black people so much. So much that to offend this person he called them a derogatory term for a black person. You need to make sure this guy gets what he deserves.

Youz have never spent much time with people from the 'hood'. White, black or hispanic, they all use the word to each other all the time.

That doesn't mean they aren't racist, or vegetarians.

Re: Was this a racial slur or not?

An easy rule of thumb is if you're not black, don't say it. Then, you'll never have to worry whether it is racist or not. Easy.

Have to know whether the driver who yelled was colorblind or near-sighted before making the call.

Not an easy rule for many of the posters here that seem to get very upset about not being able to say it.

Or the many posters who get upset when some say it but not others.

Re: Was this a racial slur or not?

I think some words are inherently harmful, and that particular term is one of them. Changing the spelling doesn't change the origin of the word. Its like a form of "reverse racism" now, because if a white person says it to a black person (even in jest), they'd get beaten or shot.

So here's my solution: either allow all ethnic groups to use it as a term of friendship, or ban it for them all. Current practices surrounding this word reek of political correctness and arbitrary offense.

Re: Was this a racial slur or not?

I say that word all the time to black people, I'm white-ish, I don't get it.

Of course, like any words it's all about the delivery. And I'm not exactly blurting it out to strangers.

Placing so much value on words is idiotic as fuck, they're man made, we assigned meaning to them, it's stupid that people get so impassioned about them. Communicating ideas and feelings are one thing, saying a single word is another.
