They are just parading through the streets in celebration of their master dog ancestors on National Dog Day.

Detroit going to the dogs… literally. There are an estimated 50,000 homeless dogs roaming the city in packs, attacking people, interrupting mail service, and no doubt turning all the squirrels into nervous wrecks.

Why do they not issue hunting permits and make a little money?

Third World stray animal problem in Detroit (Video)

... after the city filed for chapter 9 bankruptcy this July, the amount of abandoned animals is speculated to have risen to staggering proportions. If the speculation is true, it puts the number of stray animals (dogs and cats) from 50,000 a-year-ago, and could now be close to 70,000 animals roaming the streets, left in abandoned houses and lots, to fend for themselves.

“It was almost post-apocalyptic, where there are no businesses, nothing except people in houses and dogs running around.” Amanda Arrington of the Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington, stated, as she toured the streets of Detroit in October of last year.

Re: 50,000 abandoned dogs roaming streets of Detroit in packs

Packs of starving stray dogs swarm Detroit as people flee the bankrupt city leaving their pets behind
  • As many as 50,000 strays are estimated to be roaming the city streets and taking shelter inside the countless buildings
  • The number of strays is rising as Detroit's human population dwindles to 700,00 from nearly one million in 2000
  • Some of the strays are terrorizing neighborhoods, killing pets and biting mail carriers
  • The city has only four animal control officers - which is down from 15 in 2008

Those dogs shouldn't be having puppies until they are mature enough to handle having them.

Wow, I was going to make a joke about this, but it is actually a chiling thought. If those numbers are even close to accurate, imagine how much uncontrolled breeding is going on. If they don't get a handle on this soon, it'll be a terrible problem.

Re: 50,000 abandoned dogs roaming streets of Detroit in packs

The problem in detroit is being exagerated. All major cities have massive stray dog populations.
There are an estimated 50,000 street dogs in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County and City alone, 200,000 residents were bitten by abandoned dogs in one year.
http://www.strayrescue.org/node/319

I've seen the LA stray dog packs personally and it is a bit third world: Packs of dogs roaming together, a dozen sleeping under a car together, etc.

Certainly something needs to be done in all big cities, but to play up the dog problem as being a problem because detroit went bankrupt is bullshit. It's an ongoing and common dog problem, not something new.

Yeah, just wait till some eager hunter shoots a kid's dog thinking it's a stray. That'll go over well.

Then again, by the sound of it, the kid can just run out into the street and get any kind of dog he wants, so maybe this could work!

I think we can all agree this dog problem hasn't gotten better with the owners abandoning them and leaving town. It was bad before, but I'd say it's probably worse since there isn't anyone to take care of them.

On another note, I'm surprised children haven't been left behind.
