Shock poll: Wealthy, not middle class, support Obama

This does not surprise me one bit. Obama is a cronyist who uses the government to give special favors and corporate welfare to his rich friends - and he has a lot of rich friends. It used to be that making it in this country meant you had to create a great new idea. Now, it means that you have to have the right political connections. The more the government is involved in picking winners and losers, the more the rich will approve of Obama.

Shock poll: Wealthy, not middle class, support Obama

May 1, 2013

President Obama's approval numbers are starting to mimic Mitt Romney's.

According to a new YouGov poll, it's the rich -- not the poor or middle class -- who back Obama more despite his 2012 campaign attacking the rich.

The poll for the Economist found that fewer than half of those with incomes less than $100,000 per year approve of Obama's performance, while he enjoys a 54 percent approval rating among those with incomes higher than that.

Those earning less than $40,000 a year disapprove of the president's performance, 51 percent to 45 percent. Those earning $40,000 to $100,000 disapprove by a rate of 50 percent to 48 percent.

"A largely jobless recovery coupled with a Quantitative-Easing-fueled stock market rally seems to earn more smiles from the upscale among us, fewer from the working class," said the pollsters.

So making more than $100,000/year makes you "wealthy"? Who knew? It sure as fuck doesn't make you "wealthy" where I live.

People who are educated support Obama more than those that are not. Those same people, largely by virtue of being educated, are likely to have higher incomes.

Move that threshold to something more reasonable like $250,000/year and get back to us.

I would think a President would always get a higher approval rating from those more well-off. Who's got the historical data on that?

We should be celebrating this, right? Obama is looking out for the "job creators"!

Poor people oppose Obama because he's a communist who's out to take away their guns, a closeted homosexual, a Muslim, and the Antichrist.

Not to pick on you specifically, and I guess I see your overall point, but this kind of thinking really bothers me. $100k puts you in the top 20% of households. Individually only 7% of Americans earn $100k or more. 35% make $25k or less. Can we stop pretending these people are 'middle class' or whatever? If you can't qualify the top 7% of income earners as wealthy, then the rest of us are truly dirt poor. I wish $100k weren't considered wealthy, I wish incomes were higher across the board, but that's not reality. For every 'not wealthy' six figure earner in a high cost of living area, there are many, many more people getting by on substantially less.

If you make 100K or more a year then you are wealthy. I agree. Now if you make 100K or more and have a wife and a bunch of kids then that's your own damn fault.

It's actually pretty evenly split until you get to the highly educated.

"Wealthy" means you have wealth. If you live somewhere that takes all your income to live in a comparable manner to the median American household, you aren't wealthy. You may have a high income, but you don't have wealth. And conversely, low earners can accumulate wealth.

I wish poll graphics readily contained the information used to obtain their statistics. How many were polled? Where where they polled at?

I think the point is that the poll is recent, and not who someone supports rather than Romney. Or I am reading it incorrectly.

Shit. Push taxes on me all you want so long as you don't get rid of the loopholes, and you put in regulations that hurt my competition by keeping them from getting off the ground, and make sure you are supporting laws that send me more business. You apparently only see what Obama says he is doing and do not see the actual result.

Let me write your legislation for you, and I'll support you!!! That's where you get the support.

Yes, the poll in the OP is Obama approval. Nothing to do with Romney and the article is stupid for mentioning him.

Wealth is largely dependent on what state you live in. I'm sorry, but $100k a year in NJ is not wealthy. I pay 6K a year for property taxes alone on a 1200 sqft townhouse. Daycare for two children is $1800 per month.

To me, wealthy means not having any worries about finances, numerous residences including vacation homes, etc. Wealthy where I live is more like $250k per year or more.

If you have to work you're not wealthy. Wealthy is no financial worries, living off income generated by assets with never having to touch the principal.

I love how people are discussing the result of a single poll as if it was the final word on a subject.

As Chris Rock famously said, "I'm not talkin' about rich ... I'm talkin' about WEALTH!"

To paraphrase his observation from about 20 years back, Shaquille O'Neal is rich. The man who signs Shaquille's paycheck is wealthy.

It supports the thesis that Barack Obama is the Worst President Ever, so of course the usual suspects are grabbing onto it like a dog with a juicy bone.

No idea what you earn, but i fairly sure you could have purchased a cheaper townhouse and then your property taxes wouldn't be as high. And if you didn't have children, then you wouldn't have that daycare expense (which seems to be a normal amount). Its like a rich guy complaining that he isn't rich because he has to pay his $1000 car payment, his $1000 golf club membership, etc.
