What are the most liberal and conservative areas of the country?

Based on some posts in this thread:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/politics-wo...s-senator.html

specifically, these posts:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/11656136-post21.html
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/11656136-post24.html
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/11656136-post26.html
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/11659171-post45.html

I started wondering what were the most liberal and conservative regions of the country. The easiest way to divide up the country in these terms is by congressional district. Unfortunately, the natural place to look, the American National Election Survey, doesn't sample enough people to have respondents from all 435 Congressional distritcs. However, the Cooperative Congressional Election Survey does - the 2010 survey has over 55,000 cases. So, I took the responses for this question:

V243 Ideology
Thinking about politics these days, how would you describe your own political viewpoint?
4388 <1> Very Liberal
9378 <2> Liberal
15202 <3> Moderate
14287 <4> Conservative
9222 <5> Very Conservative
2893 <6> Not sure
30 <8> Skipped
0 <9> Not Asked

and averaged them. I then produced this, a dotpolot of the 20 most liberal and most conservative districts in the country. Sorry I don't have a lot to add other than that, I was just curious what the answer was and thought I'd share.

How does that compare to the cook pvi? They have TX-13 and NY-15 as the most partisan.

The Cook PVI measures partisanship. This is a measure of ideology.

Yeah, the 2012 survey isn't publicly available yet.

Re: What are the most liberal and conservative areas of the country?

CA-2 (my district) has to be more liberal than CA-6.

Was it so far off the chart that it didn't display? Or was it the recent redistricting?

Oh, it appears CA-6 was my district before redistricting.

If you're in Marin County, then in 2010 you were in CA - 6. Congratulations.

Re: What are the most liberal and conservative areas of the country?

Washington's 7th congressional district encompasses most of Seattle, all of Vashon Island, and portions of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Tukwila, SeaTac, and Burien. Since 1989, the 7th District has been represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Jim McDermott, a Democrat.

The 7th is the most Democratic district in the Pacific Northwest, and the most Democratic district on the West Coast outside of the San Francisco Bay Area or Los Angeles. It is also the most Democratic majority-white district in the United States. Democrats dominate every level of government, and routinely win elections by well over 70 percent of the vote. Al Gore swept the 7th District in 2000 with 72% of the vote while John Kerry won 79% of the vote in the district in 2004. Barack Obama took in 84% of the vote in the district in 2008.

Washington's seventh seat in the U.S. House was added following the 1950 census, but the state did not immediately reapportion. It was contested as a statewide at-large seat for three elections: 1952, 1954, and 1956; and voters cast ballots for two congressional seats, their district and the at-large. Democrat Donald H. Magnuson won all three at-large elections. The 1958 election was the first after the state reapportioned to seven districts; Magnuson was elected to the new district in 1958 and 1960, but lost in 1962.
According to wiki. What a shit hole, I say.

Yeah, I know. It's kind of a pain having to whisper any type of conservative statements in public in order to avoid getting in an argument. You have to be very discrete in finding out who has similar beliefs in settings like school/parent get-togethers.

It's all just charts and graphs anyways. I live in a red district. If you're ever in the area, hit me up and you can hang out with me and my hippy-dippy Whole-Foods eating friends.

The USA is more non-political than cable news has led us to believe. Until/unless it's radicalized at some point, the government doesn't have a large impact on how I live my life.

CA 43 is listed as most conservative, but look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Califor...ional_district

I don't get it.

Redistricting changed that district number. Who is your representative?

I don't live there. But the chart places it as very conservative but their rep is Maxine fucking Waters and the election results show the district going solidly to democrates.

If this is an example of redistricting then I think the people who live there got a raw deal. They're "strongly conservative" and Maxine Waters is their rep?!

Exaggerating, but dead serious.

Here's what it looks like when adjusted for population:

The district number would have changed. So 43 is a different district now from the chart.

Here's what CA-43 used to be -- inland CA.

At first I was shocked that no Utah districts were on the list, until I remembered that we're gerrymandered in such a way that Democrats are somewhat evenly-divided amongst our four districts.

Nope. One of interact's definitions is not, "grow potatoes and broccoli."

Re: What are the most liberal and conservative areas of the country?

I suppose that map makes conservatives get all warm and fuzzy, but it's essentially worthless. My county is red. but except for the last two presidential elections, it's been very, very blue for decades. It's hard to even find a republican to run for a local office. They voted for Clinton, Gore, and Kerry, and always vote for the democratic senate candidates. Most of it has been gerrymandered into a red district for a powerful house member, though.

I know one county (especially a cracker-ass dump like this) doesn't invalidate the whole map, but if there are no doubt others in the same boat.
